Published author, Oracle Unleashed - Sams Publishing, February 1996. A featured speaker at Platinum Technologies PlatForum98.  Presentation was one of a handful selected for translation into Japanese.   Presented Glenayre’s use of dbVision to capture database information for historical trending analysis and web publishing.

 Education: University of South Alabama, 1980 - 1985.  Planned completion of requirements for Bachelors degree in Computer Science.  Minor in Business Administration. 

 Oracle Training: Administering the Oracle Database I,  Administering the Oracle Database II, and Symmetric Replication classes taught by Oracle Corporation, Oracle System Administration (Oracle Financials). 

 I also participate in the local Oracle User’s Group (COUG).  This professional contact allows me to keep current on Oracle RDBMS and Application related issues, new products, and knowledgeable Oracle individuals willing to pass along pertinent and helpful information.  I also attend Oracle Open World (OOW) and Oracle Applications Users Group (OAUG) whenever possible, as I find the sessions and interaction with people who are performing similar functions more helpful than textbook classes.

January 1999 – January 2002: JM Huber, Wood Products Division.  Sole Oracle DBA responsible for managing over 900 gigabytes of production, test, development, backup and migration Oracle databases (7.2.3 through  8.1.7.2.0), Oracle application executables (10.7 character through 11i), Oracle technology components (Apache web server, Oracle Forms server, Oracle Reports server, 9iAS), proactive monitoring software (CA Manage IT suite of products) while maintaining 99.94% Oracle database availability.

Major Accomplishments: 

Upgrade of Oracle 10.7 character to 10.7 NCA, where we ran 10.7 character and 10.7 NCA in a single instance, which allowed us to gradually roll out single components of 10.7 NCA to our end users.  Implemented Oracle Applications Manufacturing components after successful upgrade including MRP, WIP, and other modules. 

Single handedly created IT Intranet that was widely used to share personal employee contact information, vendor contact information, pertinent Oracle information (CSI numbers, links to Oracle, patch log information).  Intranet also contained well documented, commonly used troubleshooting procedures (Like clearing an Oracle database lock, starting and stopping the concurrent managers, starting and stopping the web servers, forms servers, Apache servers) for internal departmental knowledge sharing. 

Negotiated with some vendors (Excluding Oracle) and negotiated discounts on purchases, saving the company over $35,000 on one single purchase in 2000.  

Upgrade of Oracle 10.7 NCA to Oracle Applications 11i (Release 11.5.5).  Process included extensive customizations, and numerous interfaces to external and internal systems including MP5/R5 and web applications.

Technology Environment:

Hardware:

Servers utilized were a pair of Sun Solaris E-4000 servers equipped with 6 CPU’s and 4 gigabytes of memory.  Disk storage was provided by StorageTek SAN, and JABOD arrays.

Software:

Oracle RDBMS 7.3.4.0.1 through 8.1.7.2.0 running production environments.  Oracle Web Server 3.0 through current Apache release now utilized by Oracle 11i Applications.  Sun Sparc Solaris 2.6 through 2.8 (Solaris8).  Veritas used by SAN for disk storage management.  Computer Associates Manage IT for Oracle RDBMS proactive monitoring.

Other related tasks:

Worked closely with Unix Administrator to proactively monitor server utilization, identify defunct or runaway processes, test and verify validity of backup and recovery methods, manage disk space utilization, and proactively tune servers (At the Unix kernel level) for optimum performance.  Wrote numerous Unix shell scripts to automate redundant tasks, and automated these scripts via Unix cron jobs. 

May 2000 – Present: Part time evening instructor for Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC), instructing all five Oracle DBA Certification classes.  Though a partnership with Oracle, CPCC teaches the same classes, and uses the identical materials and PowerPoint presentations utilized at Oracle’s Education centers throughout the country.  Classes taught for Oracle Certification are Introduction to PL/SQL, Oracle Architecture and Administration, Backup and Recovery, Network Administration and Performance Tuning.

November 1996 – January 1999: Glenayre Electronics.  Oracle Data Base Administrator, Oracle Applications System Administrator.   Responsible for numerous production, and several test and development Oracle data bases.  Glenayre, a worldwide company recently went live with Oracle Applications and Oracle Manufacturing, 10.7 SC.  This production environment consisted of Citrix Winframe, HP T520’s running HP-UX 10.20, disk storage by EMC, and OmniBack II (Version 2.5) for hot and cold backup under MC Service guard (A fault tolerant software/hardware component).  Implemented online backup procedures, disaster recovery procedures, and methodology of historical data capture.  Duties include moving data from one instance to another, upgrading application and server software to latest certified releases, and tuning of instances for optimum performance using Platinum Technologies dbVision.  We are also implementing PeopleSoft HR, which went into production July 1998.

May 1996 - November 1996:  Osprey Systems Incorporated.  Oracle Data Base Administrator.  Consultant for a short term contract at Hoechst-Celanese manufacturing facility in Rock Hill, SC.   Provide legacy systems support on internally developed Revenue System.  Responsibilities include user account maintenance, verification of successful on-line and off-line backup procedures, system tuning, disk capacity planning and physical and logical disk layout, applying Oracle patches, upgrading Oracle software, and a large project of migrating  Oracle from Dec Alpha’s to HP 9000’s running HP UX 10.01.

August 1994 - May 1996: CMS Therapies, Inc. Oracle Data Base Administrator.  Responsible for the Oracle data base running on a DEC Alpha 2100 in a Unix environment.  Implemented and maintained backup and recovery procedures, SQL transaction review forms, and data dictionary maintenance.  Complete suite of Oracle CASE tools, including Designer/2000, PL/SQL, and other Oracle components. Development included integration of unlike applications on different platforms. 

March 1993 - August 1994: CMS Therapies, Inc.  Senior Programmer/Analyst in custom development environment.  Most applications were designed and developed from the ground up using FoxPro, often in an Oracle client server environment.

October 1988 - March 1993: Coral Industries. Programmer/Network Administrator.   Responsible for maintaining 60 user Novell network, running Novell 2.15, Ethernet topology.  Network was comprised of numerous gateways, used to connect users to the System/36.   Spearheaded conversion of dBASE applications to FoxPro applications.  Wrote from scratch the raw materials program, custom shower door application, and most other in house applications.

March 1988 - October 1988: Taurus Exploration.  System administrator for 2 DEC Services for MS-DOS Networks.  Performed initial system analysis, installed and maintained VAX cluster.  Prepared procedure manuals and taught efficient use of network processing.  Did network programming for DEC, Novell, and PC Lan networks, and taught use of custom developed applications.

June 1986 - March 1988: McDonnell Douglas Banking Systems Company.  Programmer/Analyst for the micro computer products group.  Evaluated possible projects for development, and then developed entire software packages from the ground up.  Responsibilities include interfacing micro computers with Unisys mainframes, and an IBM System/36.  Also performed internal support for micro computers.

May 1984 - June 1986: United States Sports Academy.  Micro Computer Specialist.  Trained new users in the use of computer equipment, both hardware and software.  Taught the use of dBASE III, Lotus 1-2-3, and other software packages.  Did custom programming for internal department.  Most custom programming was done in dBASE III, and usually involved interfacing several separate software packages.
