The Haystack Ball

When the pumpkins danced in the field
At the annual Haystack Ball,
The scarecrows played the fiddles,
Shouting, "Welcome, one and all."

The old owls screeched and hooted --
The bats fluttered their wings,
Playing the spider's stretched-taut webs
Like haunting cello strings.

The witches and the goblins
Circled high on their broomsticks,
And the headless horseman showed up
With his usual bag of tricks.

The skeletons shook and rattled their bones
As they danced in the moon's bright light,
And the ghosties and the ghoulies
Groaned and moaned in their delight.

And I, in my secret hideaway,
Thrilled and laughed at the sight,
When the annual Haystack Ball was held
On a magical Halloween night.
