If known, a wife's name and number follows that of her husband.
To find anyone's father, multiply his/her number by 2.
To find anyone's mother, multiply his/her number by 2 and add 1.
To find any male's child, divide his number by 2 and return to the prior generation.
To find any female's child, subtract 1 from her number, divide that by 2 and return to the prior generation.
Ancestors whose names are preceded by the * mark are call "redundant", which means that there is descent from more than one of their children.
An ahnentafel is a condensed way of showing the same information as is found in a pedigree chart. And while it takes some arithmetic to discover the links between generations, the ahnentafel displays clusters of geographical locations of families through generations of migration, which can be very helpful in planning for future research.
