1840 . . The Brig Souther was built at the Souther Ship Yard in Quincy, MA by John Lincoln Souther. 89'8" x 24'8" x 10'3". 197 74/95 tons with one deck, billet head.
1840 Nov 23 of Boston. Master, David Eldridge of Chatham, MA. Owners: David Eldridge, of Chatham, MA; Alfred C. Hersey of Boston, MA; Caleb Nickerson of Chatham, MA & John Lincoln Souther of Quincy, MA.
1841 Jun 23 Master, Asa Pratt.
1841 Oct 9 Master, David Eldridge.
1842 Oct 10 Master, Elisha Baker. Owners: Heirs of Caleb Nickerson: Benjamin Dodd; Zenis Snow of Boston, MA; Esther Smith of Dartmouth & John N. Brown of Windham, NH.

1852 May 30 Jonathan B. Atkins, from Mobile for Boston with cargo of Cotton, hides and staves, mistook Sankaty Light for Gay Head and ran through Muskegat Channel supposing it to be South Channel. She grounded on Shovelful Shoals and was gotten off after four hours by steamer, Massachusetts. Nantucket Wrecks by A. H. Gardner.

. . . The picture above is of a painting owned by S. Wakeman. The Quincy Historical Society has a photo of the Brig Souther, lines from a half-model & an account book.
. . . Note: Some timber taken at the Quincy place for deck beams for the Brig Souther was used to rebuild Souther Tide Mill in 1849, after the earlier one burned.
