In doing research on my husband’s family, I have found a family who basically had their American roots in South Carolina. 

 

Since South Carolina did not require the recording of records, except for deeds, until the late 1800s and early 1900s; it is hard to prove without a doubt the origin of some of the families.

 

I have spent countless hours, researching books, libraries, courthouses, etc. for any bit of information I could find.  I feel at this point that I have gone as far as I can with this family.

 

I hope that you will accept it as being as accurate as I could make it.  If you find errors; please let us know that it may be corrected.

2.  Anna² SOUTER (Johann Georg¹); b. circa 1720 in Germany; m. Jacob BARR.

 

Jacob BARR was born in 1723 in Bart Township, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

The three known children of Anna² SOUTER and Jacob BARR were as follows:

                              i. Anna³ BARR.

                             ii. John BARR.

                            iii. Susanna BARR.

3.  Johann Georg² SOUTER (Johann Georg¹); b. circa 1740 in Germany; m. Francis "Fanny" AUTZ circa 1765 in Fairfield, South Carolina.  He immigrated to America in 1764 on a ship named Boston arriving in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from Rotterdam on 30 Nov 1764.  He American name became John George SOUTER, Jr. and also known as George SOUTER.  The immigrant ancestor of this line.  Note: One report says he was born circa 1755.

 

Francis "Fanny" AUTZ was born in Germany.

The four known children of Johann Georg² SOUTER and Francis "Fanny" AUTZ were as follows:

                 4           i. Mary³ SOUTER, b. circa 1767 in Richland County, South Carolina; m. Jacob LEVER.

                             ii. Mottice SOUTER; b. circa 1779 in Fairfield, South Carolina.

                            iii. Colley or Collie SOUTER; b. circa 1781 in Fairfield, South Carolina.  Her estate was administered by John W. SOUTHER in Macon County, Gerogia in 1858.

                 5         iv. George SOUTER Jr, b. 1783 in (one report says 1790), Richland, Fairfield, South Carolina; m. Catherine Barbara or Barbary "Katie" SMITH.

4.  Mary³ SOUTER (Johann Georg², Johann Georg¹); b. circa 1767 in Richland County, South Carolina; m. Jacob LEVER circa 1793 in Lexington, South Carolina; d. Oct 1796 in Richland, Fairfield, South Carolina.

 

Jacob LEVER was born in 1766 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina. He died in Oct 1796 in Richland County, South Carolina.

The two known children of Mary³ SOUTER and Jacob LEVER both b. in Cedar Creek, South Carolina, were as follows:

                              i. Samuel⁴ LEVER; b. 1684.

                             ii. John LEVER; b. Oct 1796; d. 26 Dec 1877 at age 81.  Buried in the Lever Family Cemetery in Cedar Creek Comm. Upper Richland County, South Carolina.

 

5.  George³ SOUTER Jr. (Johann Georg², Johann Georg¹); b. 1783 in (one report says 1790), Richland, Fairfield, South Carolina; m. Catherine Barbara or Barbary "Katie" SMITH, daughter of Stephen SMITH and Mary Eve HAMITER, 1808 in Richland, Fairfield, South Carolina; d. 12 Feb 1821 in Richland, Fairfield, South Carolina.      George is buried in the Old Souter Place, Fairfield County, South Carolina.

 

The Will of George SOWTER / SOUTER, Jr.  was dated 6 Feb 1821 and gives his household and plantation tools and stock to his wife Catherine Barbara SOUTER.  After her death to his three sons, John, Daniel, George Wesley; and for them to make up to his two daughters, Fanny and Charlot an equal part.  The Will was filed 16 Feb 1821.

 

Catherine Barbara or Barbary "Katie" SMITH was born on 17 Apr 1788 in Richland, Fairfield, South Carolina. She died on 7 Sep 1881 in Richland District, Fairfield, South Carolina, at age 93. She Catherine is buried in Pine Grove Church Cemetery, Upper Richland County, South Carolina.

 

Catherine's Will was dated 3 Oct 1874 and mentioned her daughter Francis HENDRIX whom she left all of the plantation lying on Bigg Ceder Creek containing 160 acres and at Francis's death then the plantation was to go to her granddaughter Charlott C. LEITNER.  To son Daniel SOUTER she gave $5.00 and to her son G. W. SOUTHER $5.00 and to daughter Charlott LEITNER $5.00 and half of Catherine's cloting and bedding.  The Will was filed with the courts on 12 Aug 1882.

The six known children of George³ SOUTER Jr. and Catherine Barbara or Barbary "Katie" SMITH were as follows:

                              i. John H.⁴ SOUTER; b. circa 1808 in Richland, Fairfield, South Carolina; d. circa 1824.

Thomas HENDRIX was born on 2 Apr 1800 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina. He Thomas is buried in Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Fairfield County, South Carolina.

The two known children of Frances "Fannie"⁴ SOUTER and Thomas HENDRIX were as follows:

               10           i. Charlotte C.⁵ HENDRIX, b. 14 Jun 1829; m. Dedrick F. HAMITER; m. John W. LEITNER.

7.  Daniel C.⁴ SOUTER (George³, Johann Georg², Johann Georg¹); b. circa 1813 in Richland, Fairfield, South Carolina; m. Charlotte TURNIPSEED, daughter of Felix TURNIPSEED and Mary; m. Susan C. HAMITER, daughter of David H. HAMITER and Harriet KLECKLEY; d. 1886 in Clay County, Florida.

 

Charlotte TURNIPSEED was born on 29 Jan 1814. She died on 25 Sep 1845 at age 31. She Charlotte's surname in German is: REPSAMAN.  She is buried in the Souther-Turnipseed Cemetery in Richland County, South Carolina.

The four known children of Daniel C.⁴ SOUTER and Charlotte TURNIPSEED were as follows:

                              i. Julius⁵ SOUTER.

                             ii. Madora SOUTER.

                            iii. Isabella SOUTER.

                           iv. George SOUTER Died in Florida at age 19.

 

Susan C. HAMITER was born circa 1828 in Richland, Fairfield, South Carolina. She died in 1886 in Florida.

8.  George Wesley⁴ SOUTER (George³, Johann Georg², Johann Georg¹); b. 1 Jan 1815 in Richland District, South Carolina; m. Priscilla TURNIPSEED, daughter of George TURNIPSEED and Nancy HAMITER, 1832 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina; m. Sarah A. KIRKPATRICK; d. 23 Sep 1899 in Columbia County, Arkansas, at age 84.  One reports says he died 21 Jan 1896.  He is buried in the Philadelphia Methodist Church Cemetery in Columbia County, Arkansas.

 

Priscilla TURNIPSEED was born in 1815 in Richland District, South Carolina. She died on 31 Oct 1879 in Columbia County, Arkansas.

There were no known children of George Wesley⁴ SOUTER and Priscilla TURNIPSEED.

Jacob LEITNER Jr., son of Jacob LEITNER and Mary Eve GRADICK, 1 Nov 1834 in Richland, Fairfield, South Carolina; d. 18 Oct 1909 in Anthony, Florida, at age 89.  Charlotte (SOUTER) and Jacob LEITNER moved from South Carolina to Marion County, Florida.

 

Jacob LEITNER Jr was born on 5 Nov 1807 in Richland County, South Carolina. He died on 29 Jul 1884 in Anthony, Florida, at age 76.

Dedrick F. HAMITER was born circa 1825. He died in Dec 1850.

The only known child of Charlotte C.⁵ HENDRIX and Dedrick F. HAMITER was:

                              i. Frances⁶ HAMITER; b. 4 Oct 1847; d. 16 Sep 1913 at age 65.

 

John W. LEITNER was born circa 1830. He died; John was killed in the Civil War.

There were no known children of Charlotte C.⁵ HENDRIX and John W. LEITNER.

 

11.  Mary Ann⁵ SOUTER (George Wesley⁴, George³, Johann Georg², Johann Georg¹); b. 22 Nov 1838 in Richland, Fairfield, South Carolina; m. William Augustus NIPPER; m. Maxie Grey SNIDER 20 Mar 1870 in Clayton County, Georgia; d. 18 Apr 1911 in Columbia County, Arkansas, at age 72.  She Buried in Harmony Cemetery, Rocky Mound, Columbia County, Arkansas.

 

William Augustus NIPPER was born on 27 Aug 1852.

The seven known children of Mary Ann⁵ SOUTER and William Augustus NIPPER were as follows:

                              i. John Wesley⁶ NIPPER; b. 10 May 1855 in Columbia County, Arkansas; m. Josephine HUNT.

RUFF and Jane E, 10 Oct 1861 in Richland, Fairfield, South Carolina; d. 7 Apr 1903 in Columbia County, Arkansas, at age 62.  Hilliard is buried in Harmony Cemetery in Rocky Mound, Columbia, Arkansas.  Note: In the 1870 Federal Census for Georgia there is a "Hilliard SOUTER" shown in Jonesboro, Clayton County, Georgia.

 

Jane Catherine RUFF was born on 17 Dec 1841 in Richland, Fairfield, South Carolina.

Sarah Jane "Sallie" SNIDER; d. 1915 in Corbin, Texas.  Note:  Jefferson is found in the 1870 Federal Census for Georgia as being of Jonesboro, Clayton County, Georgia and then must have moved on to Arkansas.

 

Jefferson is buried in Long Branch Cemetery in Corbin, Texas.

 

Sarah Jane "Sallie" SNIDER was born in Apr 1849.
