Emery
Souther [Pink]
An Old School Boy of Boston
Emery Souther, Pioneer Apothecary, First to Manufacture Cod Liver Oil for Medicinal Purposes
Mr. Emery Souther, who died at Stoneham on March 18, in his eighty-ninth year, was one of the "Old School Boys" of Boston and a pioneer in the retail apothecary business of this city. He was born here in 28 Oct 1818, in what is now called Revere Street and was the son of Isaiah Souther and Rebecca (Ingraham) Souther. Emery was on of ten children and as a boy and for the major part of his life lived at the West End. He went to a private primary school in Temple Street, which was kept by Miss Alice Pollard and afterward entered a public primary school on South Russell Street.
While he was a pupil at this school, a big fire occurred on Beacon Street, and the smoke there from so filled the schoolhouse, not far away, that the pupils were dismissed for the day. They betook themselves to the Common, where they saw lines of citizens passing buckets of water from the Frog Pond to supply the engines playing on the fire. In 1826 Mr. Souther attended a school in Derne Street, where the late Honorable William M. Evarts, former United States Secretary of State and Senator, was his schoolmate. In 1831 young Souther was transferred to the old Mayhew School, but ill health caused him to leave and later he took up his studies at a private school on Hancock Street, near Myrtle Street.
When he was about fifteen years of age he went to work in an apothecary store at the corner of Green and Lynde Streets. This was in 1833, and later the store was removed to the corner of Green and Leverett Streets. It was kept by James Fowle, with whom the young man remained until he was twenty-one years of age. On Christmas Day, 1843, he began business on his own account as an apothecary at the corner of Staniford and Green Streets, removing two years later to Green and Lyman Streets, where he remained until the city took this site in the course of improvements. Then Mr. Souther changed his place to a store on Green Street, between Staniford and Norman Streets, where he remained for many years. He was the pioneer in the manufacturing of cod liver oil for medicinal purposes, beginning this in 1844. He was seldom away from his business, and became widely known as an able apothecary. He became a member of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in 1851.
Mr. Souther witnessed the great riot in Broad Street one Sunday afternoon, also the Garrison riot in State Street and what was known as the Elder Knapp riot in front of the Bowdoin Square Church. When he was only about eight years of age he witnessed an exhibition test of the burning of hard coal, in Bowdoin Square, believed to be the first trial of this kind in public. It took place in front of the block or stone buildings which formerly faced the square. A wire basket containing about an eighth of a ton of the coal was supported on iron stakes driven into the ground, and thus the experiment was made.
Mr. Souther in 1848 married Miss Hannah Lincoln Souther, a distant relative living in Quincy. He long was a worshipper at the Old South Church and had served as a member of its standing committee. For far more than two score of years he was a member of the Boston Provident Association, serving on its board of management and also as one of its vice presidents. He also had served as secretary of the Young Men's Benevolent Society and for about fifty years was one of its visitors. As a young man, he belonged to the military company known as the Rife Rangers, he was an honored member of The Old School Boys of Boston Association.

Mary Gooding Souther [Green]
Mary Gooding Souther died at the home of her niece, Mrs. Mary E. Souther, Skomerby, No. 149 Park Street where she has made her home for the last eleven years, November 26, 1901, aged 97 years, 2 months, 27 days. Miss Souther was one of the oldest to townborn [sic] persons living in Portland. When she was born, the town had but about five thousand inhabitants and she saw it grow to its present size. She has passed through the excitement of five wars with our people, namely: the War of 1812, Madawaska War, Mexican War, Civil War and the Spanish War. She was nearly nineteen when the first steamboat came into our harbor and was a middle aged person when the first railroad train ran here and has seen the beginning of the telegraph and development of electricity. Few persons have seen such rapid progress in this world; the rise from the primitive to the luxurious living.
Mary Gooding Souther was born August 29, 1804 and was the daughter of Edward Barnard and Dolly (Tukey) Souther of Portland. Her father was a baker. She was the eldest of eight children by two mothers. Her mother was the daughter of John Tukey, Jr. and Rebecca Bangs and died in 1807, aged 25 years. Her two younger sisters died in infancy so she was the only child of her mothers who grew to maturity. Her father, Edward Barnard Souther, married for his second wife, Mrs. Deborah (Daggett) Smith in 1809 and she had five more children, some of whom have posterity. Her father died in 1824, aged 47 years, when she was about twenty. Her stepmother lived until 1868 when she died at the age of 83.
Miss Souther's mother had only one sister, Susanna Tukey, who married Nathaniel Griffin, in 1801 and she had five children. Her only brother, Houchin Tukey, died at 22, unmarried. John Tukey, Jr. her grandfather, was the son of John Tukey the emigrant of the family and the ancestor of all the name, [sic] as far as known here in this country. John Tukey married Abigail Sweetser here in 1749, she the daughter of Benjamin Sweetser, a soldier at Louisburg from Portland in 1745, who lived in the west corner of Congress and Franklin streets, John Tukey lived on the west corner of Quincy and Congress streets and the first street ran through his land. Tukey's bridge was named for this family. The oldest living representative of this family here now is Mrs. William W. Carr, now almost 87, who was Julia Tukey, the daughter of Lemuel and the granddaughter of John, the emigrant.
Mary Gooding Souther's grandfather Tukey had four brothers who served in the Revolutionary army from this town, one losing his life. The youngest of the four, William Tukey, was one of the masons who laid the bricks in 1785-6, in the old Wadsworth-Longfellow house and worked on the first light house at Portland Head. He also worked on Port Sumner on North street, when build, when he had a hearted discussion about the best manner of building a heating furnace, with Tallyrand afterwards the celebrated French statesman. The details of the story are still known in the family. I remember William Tukey well. He was a brother to my great grandfather, Stephen Tukey and he lived until he was over 92 years of age. Mrs. Souther's grandmother Rebecca (Bangs) Tukey belonged to the family of the name so well known in our early history and for whom Bangs Island was named. Before her death Miss Souther was the oldest member of the High street church.
This venerable woman's life and ancestry has been thoroughly identified with Portland, where she herself has lived for nearly a century. Aged as she was she rarely referred to the end. She was content to live here in the town she loved and where she would finally be laid with her kindred who had gone before. I never passed her home and it has been often, but I looked to see if she was still sitting by the window and almost always I saw her. She was unwell but a [paged ripped] and the end has now come. N.G.

Violet Fern (Rogers) Souther, age 88, of Helena died of natural causes Sunday, April 25, 2004, at Cooney Convalescent Home in Helena.
She was born August 30, 1915, in Bowbells, North Dakota, to Charles and Anna Rogers. Mom grew up during the hard years of the Depression. Her mother died when Mom was 14, and she had to leave school after the eighth grade to help support her family. In January 1937, she met her one and only love, Orville Wilford Souther and married him August 30 of that year. They waited until five minutes after midnight so they could be wed on her 22nd birthday. They farmed near Columbus/Lignite, North Dakota, until 1950, then moved to Montana, where Orville went to work for Mom's brother Clint on his farm. He later began a career in the oilfields and they lived near Oilmont and in Conrad, then in Shelby. When they retired, they moved to Libby, where they resided until moving to Cut Bank in 1990.

Mom resided in Cut Bank with her daughter Judy until entering the Glacier County Nursing Home in Cut Bank. In May 2000, she moved to Cooney Convalescent Center in Helena to be near Judy, who had moved there.
Mom always said she was a "tough old German" and proved it by overcoming a hard early life, working hard all her life and doing it all with very few complaints, even about multiple hip fractures.
She loved her sons-in-law, Don and Mick, and especially enjoyed ice fishing with Don.
We will always value the lessons we learned from her and be grateful for the loving care she gave to us, and her kindness to everyone. We love you and will miss you always.

Cohasset, July 22 - This town was shocked to learn this morning of the sudden death in Shreveport, Louisiana, of Ex-Selectman, William Otis Souther, well known business man and prominent in the civic and political life of this community for the past 36 years. Mr. Souther with his wife was on a business trip to his oil fields in that section. The telegram from Mrs. Souther briefly stated that her husband had dropped dead.
He was known far and wide as "Bill" Souther. Few men of this town had a wider acquaintance in business and political circles than he. From the time he reached his majority he had been an elected official of his town and state at various times. He had served as Selectman, assessor and member of the Public Welfare Board. On several occasions he was elected by a scant three-vote margin and often lost by a one-vote margin. He was a fair but hard fighter in all his political activities and the local elections were always enlivened by his circulars, in which he never minced words or facts relative to the issues of the campaign.
In 1912 he was elected to the Legislature from the 3d Plymouth District, comprising the towns of Hull, Hingham and Cohasset, as an Independent-Democrat, although he was identified with the Republican party all his life. He served for three terms and was active in securing needed improvements for his district, including by-pass roads at Hingham and a breakwater off the Gun Rock shore at Nantasket for the protection of fishermen. He was an unsuccessful candidate later for Senator and Congress, but he was always able to return as a Selectman on the several occasions he ran. He voluntarily retired from public service six years ago.
He was a native of Cohasset, the son of the late William Otis Souther and Orianna Augusta (Lincoln) Souther.
One of the last public improvements which he fought successfully for was the new Route 3A running from Hingham Harbor to Greenbush, which is considered one of the best public roads in this part of the state. For the past several years he had been endeavoring to secure a spur road from Route 3A into the center of Cohasset."
