From Mitchell: Following information from Jewell Green (written
in 1976) describing pre-WWI events:
"Manie (pronounced with a long 'a') and Rosa
were our neighbors on the northeast. He as a retired sawmill man.
They came from Cherokee Co and settled on Sand Flat. The Jowells
all loved to sing and were all good singers. All the people in the
community loved to sing, and we had singing schools often where we all
learned to read music. Mr. Jowell usually led our singing unless
a visiting leader was present. The Jowell relatives from Cherokee
Co would often come to visit, and were always there when we had an all
day singing at the school building. On these occasions, they would
come over on Saturday afternoon. That night they would move the organ
out into the large hall, and everyone gathered around for a song fest.
Their voices were loud and clear, with such beautiful harmony and sentiment."
Also from Mitchell: Robert Marion Jowell md second Bell Scates,
3 Apr 1920, in Burkburnett, TX. The family was appalled by Manie's
second marriage and nicknamed this second wife "Miss Toots". She
was very much younger and a flashy dresser. When it became clear
that she was a proper and loving wife, the nickname remained, but as a
term of affection.
