Old Growth "Nurse" Stump

The decaying surface of a "Nurse Stump" is a source of nutrients and a reservoir for moisture where mosses, lichens, and ferns grow. Small shrubs and trees such as huckleberry and hemlocks are common. Micro-organisms and insects work together with plants to decom-pose the stump creating soil.
