Old George
This statue of George Washington was carved by Mathew Seltzer Kahle in 1844. It was installed on top of Center Hall at Washington College in Lexington, VA. (Washington & Lee University). The 94" high statue was carved from a log of poplar Kahle found in 1842. The statue remained atop the cupola for almost 150 years. In 1990 it was replaced with a bronze replica and the original was sent to Birmingham, AL for restoration. Today the restored statue is housed in the Leyburn Library at Washington & Lee University. |
