Old George

Old George was painted red and yellow by VMI cadets almost every year!

This statue of George Washington was carved by Mathew Seltzer Kahle in 1844. It was installed on top of Center Hall at Washington College in Lexington, VA. (Washington & Lee University). The 94" high statue was carved from a log of poplar Kahle found in 1842. The statue remained atop the cupola for almost 150 years. In 1990 it was replaced with a bronze replica and the original was sent to Birmingham, AL for restoration. Today the restored statue is housed in the Leyburn Library at Washington & Lee University.
