The deer was standing near our front porch, helping himself to Jenny's petunias in the flower pots on the porch - a little sweet, dew-dropped breakfast, maybe to help Jenny celebrate!
David slowly moved to get his camera, but just that movement made the deer scamper to the yard across the street. David was able to get a few pictures of him before he headed back into the woods to his own home.
This is not the first time we've hosted wildlife in our yard. Last month, we had a snapping turtle under our rhododendron, laying her eggs. Her shell was about the same radius as a soccer ball. She stayed with us for almost two days, and left her eggs in a nest right next to our foundation, under the bushes out front. Some internet research taught us that we should expect about 50 hatchlings sometime in late August. We'll keep an eye out for them. Unfortunately, so will all the crows in our trees!
We have also had a box turtle lay her eggs in our lawn, and at various times througout the year we can see chipmunks, rabbits, and of course, many squirrels. The swans from the pond near our house have been known to waddle up our street, and the geese are often heard flying overhead. We have many different species of birds, including bluejays, hummingbirds, cardinals, crows, mourning doves, and many others which we cannot identify. Our neighbors have reported foxes, hawks, and blue herons all in our neighborhood.
