Back to Front Door |
May 23:We got a little later start than we wanted. The original plan was to be up and out of the house by 8:00am, so we could make the 6-hour trip and arrive by mid-afternoon. Well, actually we didn't wake up until 7:30, and we hadn't packed anything yet. But we did all our stuff in record time, and were on the road by 9:00am. We even had time to get a full tank of gas!
We drove pretty much straight through from Maryland to Greenville, with a short stop for lunch and a couple very short potty breaks. The kids took their naps in the car before lunch, and were really great troopers the rest of the way there. There were no arguments, no fussing or whining, and very little "are we there yet" syndrome! We were in the car instead of the van, becuase it was a short overnighter and we didn't have much stuff with us. The car got really good gas mileage (more than 40 miles/gallon!). We got to Grandma Myers' house a little after 3:00pm.
When we got to Grandma's house, we were ready to get out and stretch our legs. The kids had a fun time playing in Grandma's front yard. Mike made 26 laps around the front yard without stopping, and Kim practiced her splits in the grass. (We discovered that she is very flexible. Just watching made us all cringe and say "Ouch"!) Mike and Kim explored Grandma's street a little bit. After dinner, we went back outside in the back yard. The kids had fun tossing their new Teenie Beanie Babies up into the air. Mike got his stuck in the tree, but Grandma got it down with her clothseline pole.
Mike and Kim went inside and got ready for bed. One of the coolest things about visiting Grandma Myers is that they get to sleep on sleeping bags in the den. They stretched out and before long, they were both asleep.
May 24:Sunday morning, Mike was the first one awake - no surprise there! Kim was next, then Grandma, then finally David and Jenny rolled out of bed. Everyone got showers, baths, etc., and soon we were all ready for church.
Grandma took the day off from being in the choir so she could sit with us. Because Jenny was born in Greenville and lived there 'til she was 10, there are a lot of people in the church who remember her and make a point to say hello when we visit. It's always nice to see old friends.
After church, we drove out to Perkins for Sunday dinner. Grandma doesn't cook all that much anymore, and it's just a whole lot easier for her and for us if she doesn't feel pressured to make a big Sunday dinner for us. That suits everyone just fine, especially Mike and Kim, who like to order pancakes for Sunday dinner! Grandma and David both ordered Caesar salads in bread bowls. Those salads were both huge, though Grandma contends hers was twice as big as David's, and that's why she couldn't finish hers. (Nice try, Grandma!)
After dinner, we went back to Grandma's house and it was time to pack up and get back on the road. We said goodbye to Grandma at about 1:30pm, and drove home to Maryland, arriving at about 7:45pm. We had a fun time visiting and playing with Grandma, and we're looking forward to another trip there. Thanks Grandma! |
