On October 3, 1998, we piled into the van and drove to Hershey, PA for a fun day at Hershey Park. Uncle Rob and Aunt Ann came to visit us that weekend just so they could go with us to Hershey Park. We're so glad they did, because we had a great time! David's and Jenny's employer was having the whole park to themselves that day, and only 10,000 tickets were sold. That meant we were able to enjoy short to non-existent lines for all the rides!

We started out by driving for two hours north to Hershey, Pennsylvania. That is about 15 miles east of Harrisburg, the capital of Pennsylvania. We arrived there at about 9:30am. Since the rides were not starting until 10:00am, we took the tour of Chocolate World first, and learned how Hershey makes all the yummy chocolate that we love to eat.

Next, we entered the amusement park itself, and headed straight for the back section of the park. We figured there would be no-one back there yet, as most people would stop at the rides and attractions at the front of the park first. And in fact, we were right! We were one of only a handful of groups who ventured back to the big new wooden roller coaster, the ferris wheel, and some other fun rides. We spent most of the morning riding rides one after the other, with absolutely no wait! We were often the only people on the rides!

We wore ourselves out by enjoying every ride at least once, but most twice or more. The highlights of the day for Kim were the "Rodeo" and the "Whip". She loved the Trailblazer too, which is a small rollercoaster with some tight curves and non-trivial hills.

Mike loved the Whip too, and ran back around to ride it over and over again.  But the best part of the day was at the very end, when he decided to ride the Comet, a big, old wooden rollercoaster. He found out, though, that wooden rollercoasters are rickety, wobbly, and very bumpy. He definitely did not like it! After that, we told him that the SooperDooperLooper was very smooth, and would be a much better coaster for him to ride, even though it does have one upside-down loop in it. He decided to give it a try, and sure enough, he liked it! He even went on it again immediately after the first ride!

The grown-ups enjoyed the day too. Jenny and Uncle Rob rode the Great Bear, which is a new rollercoaster that is suspended from the metal track. All the adults rode the Wildcat, which is the 2-year-old wooden coaster. We took various turns on other adult rides too. No big splashes of water this year though. The temperature was only hovering in the 50's (farenheit) and it was cloudy. Definitely not a day to ride the Tidal Force.

One of the funniest things that happened is that Jenny tore a hole in the seat of her pants while she was getting off of a ride.  This happened early in the day, so she had to keep her back-end covered up with her jacket all day.
