Back to Front Door | On June 7, 1998, we took a car trip to Longwood Gardens, just southwest
of Philidelphia, PA. This trip was a combined Mother's Day and birthday
present for Jenny, who loves to garden in her spare time. The car
ride there was only about 1 1/2 hours. We arrived there at about
11:00am.
Longwood Gardens is a 1000+ acre botanical garden on the former estate of Pierre duPont. You can visit it's website here to learn more about the history of Longwood Gardens. Our visit there started with a tour of the vast Conservatory. We saw the Children's garden, the Orangery, the Palm House, the Water Lily garden, and the Banana House. We also saw some insect-eating plants! Mike and Kim were anxious to get back outside though, so we soon did. We walked to the outdoor theatre to view the fountain display. We had a nice lunch break, then went to see two waterfalls and a circular stone tower. We visited the Idea Garden, where the kids got to do some crafts with bean seeds. There was an Alphabet Garden and a maize maze for the kids. Next we went to the main Conservatory fountain for that fountain show. David and the kids went behind the fountains where they could get wet, while Jenny went to view it from the front. Later we saw two wedding couples having their portraits made in different areas. At that point, Mike and Kim were pretty tired, and we decided to head home. But first, we stopped in to Dairy Queen for some ice cream! You can see pictures from our trip here.
