Stuff Found in Dee's House
This is a bit of a hodge-podge category. There are many varied interests that Dee pursues herself.
If you'd like to get some great bread recipes check out this site. Dee uses The Bread Machine Cookbook by Donna Rathmell German for many of her recipes.
Dee loves to read. Some of the books she has read recently:
- The Petticoat Affair This book is about a scandal during Andrew Jackson's administration.
- Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil This book is about murder in Savannah, GA.
- Egyptian Myths and Legends It sure does make it easier to follow those documentaries on Ancient Egypt. This book demonstrates the universality of some myths, legends and beliefs.
- The Wives of Henry VIII. If you think modern day scandals are intriguing, well this book puts them all to shame. Six wives and mistresses, Henry sure was a busy monarch.
- It Is So Ordered, A Constitution Unfolds. By Chief Justice Warren E. Burger, Retired This makes for an interesting read. It's not just for law students. It gives an interesting perspective into the development of rights we Americans often take for granted.
- There's a Hair in my Dirt, by Gary Larson This is an entertaining story for adults. For those of you who miss the Far Side, it's a MUST read! The book is a story of a worm family, and a beautiful young maiden. There's a happy ending here for one of them. This is not a novel, and without interruptions, you can finish it in less than half an hour (if you can stop laughing.) It's not recommended for young children. My ten year old did sneak away with it and seems to have suffered no ill effects, though.
- Dave Barry is Not Making this Up A collection of some of Dave's funniest columns. Quite an enjoyable read. It can cause the reader to burst out laughing at an inopportune time, though.
- Great Expectations, by Dickens This is a classic. The themes are still relevant to society today.
- Crime and Punishment, by Dostoevsky Another classic. Don't know what to say, I guess I just don't understand Russian literature.
- Founding Brothers, by Joseph Ellis An interesting look at our 'Revolutionary War Heroes.' This is the same author who wrote American Sphinx about Thomas Jefferson.
- Diary of a Common Soldier in the American Revolution, 1775 -1783 This is based on the diary of Jeremiah Greenman, with notes from historians to help put the events in perspective. This is a very interesting read. It is a bit more difficult as the diary was left as 'unedited' as possible. Still, it gives the reader a bit of the feeling of travelling through time.
- Recovering From the Loss of a Parent, by Katherine Fair Donnelly This book is really great for anyone coping with the grief associated from loss of a parent. It is a very cathartic read, it shows how other ordinary and not-so ordinary people dealt with their grief.
- Most importantly, the one that helped her build this site Creating Cool HTML 4 Web Pages.
- A book Dee would like to read. The War Magician, this book details the exploits of a magician who joined the British Army during World War II. He became part of the camouflage unit and had some amazing exploits. This is supposedly being turned into a movie starring Tom Cruise. Sadly, the book is no longer in print and is difficult to acquire.
- Another book Dee would like to get her hands on deals with the ancient archaelogical site at Nemrud Dagi. While this is one is available, it is quite expensive.
Dee's boys love to indulge in LEGOs, they have quite a collection.
