Dee's Military Community Links
Dee's "Top" List for Being an Army Wife. This is a list of silly things that Dee came up with about army life.
Ft. Campbell, KY, home of the 101st Airborne Division.
This is almost a decent post, if you liked closed posts with little or no time with your spouse. The post was originally designed to serve ~16,000 troops and their families; with over 25,000 stationed here, bursting at the seams is not an understatement.
I can only think of a few things that would make it better.
- Female Physicians, there is not a single female doctor for women to see as a primary care person at the clinics. There are female pediatricians, and maybe even specialists, but not ob/gyns.
- MORE PARKING, this is a problem everywhere, from company lots, to the hospital, post office, commissary, etc. The brand new education center only has room for about 30% of the people it serves.
- Better mail delivery. Mail delivery to and from post addresses is neither fast nor assured. I've had magazines, packages, even bills never get here. This is actually the worst mail service I've ever had anywhere.
- A post-wide bus system, this would be a tremendous help to one car families.
- More bicycle racks.
- A recent survey said "better housing." I can honestly say that the housing for senior enlisted is the worst I've seen anywhere.
- Better schools. Most people who can afford to, send their children off-post. My son, now in 4th grade has a less strenuous coursework, then he did last year in 3rd grade.
- Smoke-free bowling lanes, at least for the youth league.
Clarksville, TN, the "city" surrounding Ft. Campbell, KY.
Clarksville promotes itself as the Queen City and the Gateway to the New South.
Again, only a few things more would be a great improvement.
- Safer Roads, islands in the middle of the multi-lane roads would be a great improvement. And, would hopefully bring the cost of car insurance to a reasonable level.
- Lower Sales taxes, 8.5% is a bit high, and it's on everything.
- An AAA office. It sure is hard to use your benefits when there isn't an office nearby.
- A National Internet service provider!
- Some kind of park or nature preserve would be nice for Bird Watching, etc.
- A Disney Store.
- Some type of stadium or auditorium.
- A Suntrust Bank branch, they're all over Tennessee...just not here.
- A minor league sports team of some kind (not likely while they have no place to play.)
Clarksville, does have some things that I like.
Ft. Benning, GA, home of the Infantry.
This post has been consistently rated one of the Best Army Wide. My only real complaint at the time I was there, was a lack of support for youth oriented activities. Unfortunately, this is a service wide problem as more and more programs are being oriented to the single soldiers.
Ft. Benning does have a post-wide curbside recycling program and a post bus system.
Columbus, GA, the city surrounding Ft. Benning, GA.
To find out more about Columbus, check out one of these two sites.
Columbus now has a Michael's.
It does have...
- Hollywood Connection, a giant indoors family entertainment area, complete with indoor gym, roller skating area, video games, and much more!
- Several Malls (one even with a Disney Store.)
- A lower tax rate, only 6% and it is slowly being eliminated on food items.
- Safer Roads, with substantial savings on car insurance rates.
- Free pre-school program for four year olds.
- Substantial college assistance for Georgia graduates.
- Several Magnet Schools.
- Numerous Suntrust Bank offices.
- An AAA office.
- Books-A-Million.
- Red Lobster.
- Outback.
- One of my favorite restaurants, Ezell's Catfish Cabin home of the best hush puppies in town.
- And a Chuck E. Cheese's for the kids.
- Just about every national ISP has a node in Columbus, as well.
- A minor league baseball and hockey team.
- A Lowes, Home Depot and Home Quarters, everything for the handyman.
A very nice trip less than an hour from Columbus is Callaway Gardens.
Click here for Pictures from Callaway Gardens.
Another trip not far from Columbus is Providence Canyon State Park
Ft. Stewart, GA, home of the 3rd Infantry Division.
I moved from Ft. Stewart in 1992. I haven't been back since. It may have lots of land, but very little of it is "developed." Most of the land is devoted to training areas and ranges. There was limited on-post housing when I was there. The surrounding city of Hinesville, GA was so small at the time, I'll instead refer to Savannah, GA.
Savannah, GA is comparable to Columbus, GA in available amenities. Savannah was recently featured in the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
- Malls
- A nice RiverWalk area
- Restaurants
- A short drive to Jekyll Island resort area
- A municipal auditorium
- A minor league baseball team
- National ISPs
- Since it is also in Georgia, it has the free preschool and college assistance programs
