John F.’s firstborn, James Henry, was nearly twenty-two and Amanda Jane Mayes Chandler, a widow of Hope Chandler, with three children was twenty-seven, they were married. She was the daughter of Allen Newton Mayes and Martha (Mattie) Anderson Mayes of Franklin County, Georgia.

On September 15th on the 1870 Newton County, Georgia census for that year, James Henry Peek was listed. The post office was for Covington and Conyers in the Sheffield district, which would later become Rockdale County. James is a farmer with real estate valued at four hundred dollars and personal property valued at three hundred-eighty dollars. In this census, he is listed as 26 and Armanda is 31, Alice C.(Cornelia)S. is 3, John F. is 8 months old, plus Judge E. Chandler 13, Laura W. Chandler 11 and Emily J. Chandler 8, the children by Arminda’s first marriage.

3. Martha (Mattie) R. Peek was born Oct. 7, 1871 in Conyers, Rockdale Co., GA and married Rev. Silas T. Sims on Aug. 16, 1899 in Conyers, GA. They had no children for she died after a long illness on June 27, 1905 in Macon, GA and was buried at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery in Rockdale Co., GA.

4. Henry Alfred Peek was born in May 1871 in Conyers, Rockdale Co., GA and married Emma Eugie Anderson before 1903 in Conyers. They had 3 known children and he died Nov. 21, 1934 in Rockdale Co., GA.

Emma Jane Chandler was born June 14, 1861 in Conyers, Rockdale Co., GA and married C. Isaac Eubanks on Dec. 18, 1881 in Conyers. They had 6 known children and she died Jan. 1, 1953 in Conyers, GA

MR. JIM HENRY PEEK HEEDS DEATH'S CALL

Resided in Sheffield District--was one on the oldest citizens of the county--

Buried at Salem.

Mr. Jim Henry Peek, well-known citizen of Sheffield district, died at his home Wednesday night of apoplexy. He will be buried at Salem Baptist cemetery. As we go to press the arrangements are awaiting the arrival of his son, Willie, from Texas.

Mr. Peek was one of the staunch old citizens of our county. An honest, upright, Christain man, always to depended upon to stand for the right. Since young manhood he has been a faithful member of the Baptist church, the interests of which he considered as sacred as the interests of his own family.

He was a loving husband, kind father, consistent Christian, good neighbor and an upright citizen. Mr. Peek was 75 years of age and though he has been feeble for sometime, died very suddenly.

He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Nellie Moon, of Walton county, three sons, J. F. Peek, of Rockdale; Willie Peek of Texas and A.H. Peek of Rockdale; one brother, W. L. Peek of Milstead, and four sisters, Mrs. R. H. Farmer, Mrs. R. F. Farmer, Mrs. J. H. Harvill and Miss Annie Peek.

A host of relatives and friends sympathies deeply with these bereaved one in their sorrow.

I have copies of Widow's Application, made 26 October 1920, who lost a husband during war as a soldier, remarried and is now a widow. The ordinary, C.F. Cook certifies that he knew Arminda J. Peek, the applicant for pension and that she is a bona fide continuing resident of said county, and was on the 4th day of November, 1908. Also that H.F. Sims,Sr., W.T. (William Terrell) Peek,(his wife) Mrs. W.A.E.(Wesley Ann Elizabeth) Peek, and W.T.(William Tip) Aycock were witnesses to the marriage, that they knew Hope Wain Chandler before the war and his wife and in the fall of the same year 1862. the report came home that he was dead as results of sickness and Mis Chandler and her children was left along and in the month of August 1866. James H. Peek married said Mis Arminda Chandler the widow of Hope Wain Chandler and they lived together as man and wife up to February 25, 1920 when James H. Peek died and Mis Arminda J. Peek is now his widow. All of the said were duly sworn by C.F. Cook, Ordinary of Rockdale County, before signing their respective affidavits and that they are truthful and trustworthy persons. I have copies of Application Pension Due Deceased Pensioner, 1926 that paided expenses of last illness and funeral for Mrs A.J. Peek date of death Nov 2, 1927. There is a copy of the undertaker and embalmers bill, R.W. Tucker &Co. 11/3 Mrs. A.J. Peek deceased, 1 Casket $125.00, 1 Steel Vault $75.00, 1 Robe $15.00, Embalming $25.00, Hearse plus $10.00, total 250.00.R.W. Tucker swore that he knew Mrs. A.J. Peek of said County, and that said Pensioner was on the Pension Roll of said County at the time death, which occurred in Rockdale County, in this State of the 2 day of Nov 1927 and that a Pension of fifty ($50.00) was due pensioner and unpaid at the time of pensioner's death, and that pensioner left no widow or dependent children surviving and no estate of any value sufficient to pay these funeral expenses, which amounted to the sum of $250.00 per sworn statements attached.Then there is copy showing that $200.00 was paid by County on 11 Nov 1927. She was buried beside her husband in the Salem Bap. Cemetery, in Conyers, Georgia. Their joint tombstone is still standing in the older part of the cemetery near the Baptist Church with an inscription. I have a photo of his and Amanda's tombstone at Salem Baptist Cemetery, in Conyers, GA. The inscription reads: the faithful are certain of their reward.
