BRAZILLA AND MARIA (WOLF) VANNOTE OF NJ, IN, AND IA

Brazilla VANNOTE (3 September 1822 Monmouth County, New Jersey - 11 March 1908 Linn County, Iowa), of New Jersey parents, was by 1849 a farmer in Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa. Soon later, he was in Monroe township. He had moved with his parents in 1839 to Wayne County, Indiana, then in 1848 or 1849 to Pike County, Illinois, then later in 1849 to Iowa. On 5 December 1844 while in Wayne County, Indiana, he married Maria (pronounced Mariah) WOLFE (20 Nov 1823 Wayne Co, IN - 29 May 1907 IA), daughter of ??? and Elizabeth WOLFE of NC/VA/MD and IN. Thomas WILSON, Justice of the Peace, married the couple. Elizabeth WOLF made the trip from Indiana to Iowa with the family. She is said to have carried $2800 in her stockings on the trip. [Elizabeth WOLF was the daughter of Frederick WOLF of VA and IN.???????] Brazilla and Maria's children included:

1. Queestia (born in Indiana, died 1849 or 1850, at the age 5, in Iowa of hives). Her name was probably Lucretia, with Queestia used as a childhood diminutive such as Creesha, Cretia, or Queesha. She was listed on the mortality schedule for 1 June 1849 to 1 June 1850, and her parents can only be surmised. She does not fit well into the family of Brazilla and Maria, but they were the only couple having children at the time in Iowa. She could have been a child of Lucretia VAN NOTE, and thus sister to Brazilla. However, there is a family tradition that Brazilla and Maria had a child who died young.

2. Nelson Webster (25 Sep 1845 Wayne Co, IN - bur 20 Oct 1874 IA), farmhand with his parents in 1870. He seems to be the person who married Lucinda WILLIAMS (4 Mar 1845 Pleasant Grove, Wisconsin - ), daughter of John and Elizabeth (?) WILLIAMS. No children recorded. After the death of Nelson, Lucinda VAN NOTE married Joseph Lingal PARKS on 10 Sep 1878 at Mount Vernon, Linn County, Iowa. Joseph and Lucinda PARKS had a family.

3. Mary Eliza (25 Dec 1846 Wayne County, Indiana - 1913, gangrene in foot, Iowa). There is no indication she ever married. (In some families, the oldest daughter was depended on to become a household aide and foster mother for the younger children. When this happened, they lost the opportunity to marry at the normal age and frequently remained single.)

4. Lazarus Noble (22 May 1848 Wayne County, Indiana - 8 November 1936 Linn County, Iowa) in 1880 through 1920 in Linn Co, IA, at Monroe. On 17 February 1870 in Linn Co, he married Keziah Jane STINSON (17 Feb 1848 Canton, Stark County, Ohio - 2 August 1934), daughter of Horace and Jane (SUFFICOAL) STINSON. Their children included: Myrta Olive; Lura Eleanor; Noble Louis; and Marvin Stinson.

5. Charles Brazilla (9 May 1850 Linn County, Iowa - 22 April 1929) in 1880 and 1900 in Clinton, Linn County, Iowa. On 15 February 1872 in Linn County, Iowa, he married Mary Ellen STINSON (23 Sep 1851 Monroe twp, Linn County, Iowa - 23 December 1930), daughter of Horace and Jane (SUFFICOAL) STINSON, and sister to Keziah Jane STINSON, Lazarus VAN NOTE's wife. Their children included: Elsie Lee; twins Eva Maude and Elva Mabel; Clara Alice; Inez May; and Vesta Irene.

6. James Homer (14 Aug 1853 Mount Vernon, Linn County, Iowa - 25 July 1930) in 1880 and 1900 in Linn County, Iowa, at Monroe. On 12 January 1875, he married Laura Lavinia MCARTHUR (May 1856 Iowa - ), of Ohio parents, and their children included: Grace Ellen; Walter Brazilla; John McArthur; Charles Wesley; Adelbert Guy; and adopted daughter Olive EPLEY.

7. Lydia Ellen (21 Jan 1855 Linn Co, IA - 5 May 1933) on 13 Nov 1877 md Frank HAY, and HAY ch incl: Cassie Irene; and George Brazilla.

8. George Bowman (28 Feb 1860 Linn Co, IA - 28 June 1918) md (1) on 18 Jan 1881 in Linn Co, IA, Mary Elizabeth MCBURNEY ( - before 1896). Their ch were Rozella; Margaret Ann; and Virlen Homer. He md (2) on 26 June 1896 Flora Flavilla WILLIAMS (Apr 1874 IA - ). Their ch were: Brazilla Lowell; Van Ruth; and Glen B.

9. Margaret Ann "Maggie" (22 Feb 1863 Linn Co, IA - d as a young wife) md Charles LONGOOD/LONGUTH, and LONGOOD ch incl:

10. Maria Caroline "Cally" (27 Jul 1864 Linn Co, IA - 29 Jan 1948) on 8 Feb 1881 in Linn Co, IA, md William Henry QUASS, and QUASS ch incl: Walter Willard; Selma Eliza; Stella V.; Opal Pearl; Hattie Marie; and Orval Earl.
