Misc. Information

The following is the account of Maud Chapman Reed kept of her visit to Pennsylvania in 1898. [My notes are in brackets]

  • Page 43:

Sunday 26th
Last night Esther and I took a walk down the road as far as Jim Laughlins and gathered mountain tea. The hills are just lovely. ... The pump station has been moved to the mouth of the creek. Mr. Laughlin's well still makes a very little oil.

When we cam back up we talked awhile to Walter Campbell [Joseph/Lucinda's son]. He married a girl named Nannie, whose people live on the island and he stays there too. He has a baby boy called Fredrick. Walter is very short and heavy and wears a mustache. Jim L.[Laughlin] says he just admires a man of Walter's build. ...

Military Information

191st PA Infantry

By the dates you gave (or that I can read), your relative was only in the 191st for three days after the war was over - so it would probably be some sort of a paper transfer. In any event, the 191st PA Inf (also know as the Veteran Volunteer Infantry) was made up of men who came from multiple source - men whose units were being disbanded but some had time left on their enlistments, transfers, a few recruits who were re-enlisting, etc. In June, 1864, the the regiment's enlistments were up and the unit was mustered out. As noted, the 191st was formed in the Spring of 1864. It was involved in the battles around Richmond in July-August 1865 and almost the entire regiment (along with the 190th) was encircled, cut off and captured at the Battle of the Weldon Railroad outside Richmond in August, 1864. Those captured, spent the rest of the war in Confederate prisons (generally Belle Isle and Salisbury). A small, reduced in number 191st (consisting of those few not captured) served out the War, but very little history is available.

Misc. Information

  • A letter was written to the Beaver County Gen. Soc. from a Mrs. Julia Schlosser, in 1985. She was the daughter of Walter and Nannie Campbell. She was trying to find information on Joseph and Lucinda. She believed Lucinda's step parents to be John (1870-1939) and Helen (1863-1929) Blasenhouer. She also shows Joseph's middle name as Frank. [Walter (3/25/1874 - 1962) and Nannie (1879-1929). Walter was also known as Dukey Campbell. They buried Hookstown Cemetery. Walter was son of Joseph and Lucinda Kennedy. Attached to her note was the reply from the Historical Society. They sent her something from the Warnes History, Pages 833-834.]
