The gospel literally means "Good News." Before you are ready to hear the "Good News," you need to hear the bad news.
The first bit of bad news is that you are currently separated from God as a result of both the original sin that goes back to Adam and Eve, but also by the sins you have committed in your life. That original sin was when Adam and Eve deliberately disobeyed God back in the garden of Eden. There is not one person alive today who does not and has not sinned in their lives. The bible tells us that "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23)
"The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:23) Quite frankly, there is no way you can earn or work your way into heaven by doing things that are pleasing to God. The only way you can get to heaven is by accepting the free gift of eternal life that comes as a result of God's grace (undeserved mercy and love) for you. "For by grace you are saved through faith and not of yourselves; it is the gift of God and not of works, lest any man should boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9). No matter how good we are, we are bound to break at least one of Gods laws. The bible tells us, " for whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offends in just one point, he is guilty of all" (James 2:10).
The only way you are going to avoid going to Hell on the day of judgment and find yourself among those who will live eternally with God is to understand why Jesus, the son of God, came to earth. He lived the perfect life in our place - he lived his whole life without committing so much as a single sin.
Now we're getting to the good news! He paid the penalty for every sin of every person who would but put their trust in Him and Him alone for their eternal salvation. Jesus even told his followers "I am the way the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father but by me" (John 14:6). So how, may you ask, does one receive this gift of eternal life? You must believe by faith that Jesus is Lord, that he died for your sins, that through his death on the cross and bodily resurrection you can be certain of having a place in God's eternal kingdom. The key to this faith is to turn away from living a sinful life and asking God for forgiveness for all of the things you have done that are contrary to his will.
"Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we are saved" (Acts 4:12). "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." "Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord SHALL BE SAVED" (Romans 10: 9 & 13).
Can you come up with a single reason why you wouldn't want to put your trust in Christ right now? You don't know, you might be hit by a bus tomorrow, and then it's too late...
