During the year of 1749, Jacob Grumbach immigrated to America, aboard the ship "Dragon" and arrived in Philadelphia [in the month of September] Oct 17, 1749. [Ref the same source as below, from Tony Grubaugh, tgrubaugh@yahoo.com]

Ref: 1769 Tax List of Frederick Co.,MD from William Crubaugh's book "Crubaugh:The American Story." "In 1769, in Frederick County, Maryland, Jacob Crumbaugh was charged in 'The Debt Book' (Tax List) on two tracts of land located in "The Elizabeth Hundred." One tract was called 'Part of the Resurvey on Good Neighborhood," 130 acres; and part of a tract called 'Indian Springs.' In 1773, Jacob was charged with part of 'Indian Springs' 110 acres and 25 acres. The 'Elizabeth Hundred' was an area surrounding Hagerstown, MD which became a part of Washington County when it was formed in 1776."

From Crubaugh:The American Story by William Leon Crubaugh, 2000. "During the year of 1749, a passenger ship named "The Dragon" sailed from Rotterdam, Holland, stopped at Portsmouth, England, and landed at Philadelphia. Her Master was Daniel Nicholas, and her two hundred and forty-four passengers were Palatines, Wurtembergers, and Alsatians, all from Southern Germany. On September 17 of that year, in accordance with the tradition of the time, the eighty-eight male passengers, who were sixteen years of age or older, were assembled at the Courthouse to swear allegiance to their new country. The oath was administered by Thomas Lawrence, Mayor of Philadelphia. A part of that ceremonial process was the making of a list of the names of the new citizens. (These lists are now referred to as "Ship's Lists.)

"Thereafter, the family name evolved into Grubaugh, Crobaugh, Crumbaugh or Crubaugh."

Per Carol Palmer, Michael Grubaugh is from Wurtemburg, Stuttgart,Germany. A Lt in militia. [Carol Palmer 626 E Webster Morrill NE 69358;303-247-2487] For documented evidence see chronological listing of Facts.

Note there are no records from Fairfield County OH which was the parent of both Knox and Richland Counties. Richland was formed out ofFairfield in 1808. There are references to the Grubaughs in Jefferson and Washington Counties; out of which Fairfield was formed. There was a marriage between Barbara Grubaugh and George Friend, Jr. in 1805 inJefferson Co., OH. Barbara was the d/o Michael Grubaugh, the immigrant ancestor. (Recent information indicates that Michael was not the immigrant but was born in PA)

On file, I have printed copies of petitions filed in 1818 and thereafter for the establishment of saloons in Vermilion Twp. The signatures of Michael and David Grubaugh are on these documents.

It appears that Michael and family first settled in Jefferson Co.,OH c. 1805 but may not have had to move futher west to reside in the Knox and Richland County areas as these counties were formed out ofWashington/Jefferson or out of counties that were formed out of them.Later Ashland County was taken out of Richland. Early Ohio county maps would help clarify this matter.

The "History of Ashland County, Ohio 1809-1880 by George William Hill, MD shows Vermilion Township - Philip, Michael, Jacob, and George Friend and Michael, Joseph, David, John and Thomas Grubaugh in the 'Pioneers of 1825 list.'

On Nov. 7, 1834 a Michael Grubaugh and heirs sold land to DavidCarpenter and wife Sarah. This may or may not be Michael the immigrantancestor.

Notes
BURIAL: Michael is buried with his second wife Susannah in Bunker Hill Cemetery which is located Worthington Township, Richland County, in Ohio. Michael was 91 at the time of his death. MILITARY: Michael served in the 3rd Company 1st regiment militia of Franklin County Pennsylvania as a lieutenant about 1793. IMMIGRATION: Michael immigrated to the U. S. sometime between 1783 and 1793. BURIAL: Buried in Bunker Hill Cemetery. NOTE: The original name may possibly have been Grumbach as there is a Grumbach River that runs through Germany in the area that used to be Prussia. Wurtenburg, Baden, Germany. NOTE: The name Grubaugh means craggy place. NOTE: A grandaughter of Michaels wrote a 3 paragraph page about her family. In it she said that her grandmother's name was Peggy. However she was quite elderly and her grandmother on the other side of the family was named Margaret and Peggy is a nickname for Margaret. There may never have been a Peggy that was married to Michael.
