My fiance is incarcerated in a prison in the midwest. He is in prison because a doctor prescribed large doses of painkillers and he became addicted. Drug addiction is an illness...NOT a crime. Below is a poem that was written by him.
At first I didn't realize just why this was to be;
Why would God bring me here and take my life from me?
For thirty years I knew Him but just knew who He was;
I took the Lord for granted for the good things that He does.
I had Him there in case I fell and when the road got rough;
And in these times I prayed to Him, I thought that was enough.
The other times I walked along with the other gods that I had,
I put the Lord back on the shelf til the next time things got bad.
All the time He waited there with His hand stretched out to me,
Never pushing me or shoving me, just waiting patiently.
With the other gods ahead of Him, I'd just be on my way;
To live my life or so I thought, just existing day to day.
For the time did come when He said enough, for you belong to me.
And into the jail I went for a time until I began to see
That Jesus is Lord above all else, in good times and in bad;
He'll walk with me along the way, He's the joy I never had.
For I've been jailed for Jesus til I realize who He is;
He's the one that saved my life and now I'm one of His.
He's the one that shed His blood and bought me with a price,
How much God must have loved me for His son to sacrifice.
Now nothing or no one else can I have before the Lord.
No more wasting precious time for that we can't afford.
For right now I'm jailed for Jesus until the time He says I'm free,
Then out I'll go into the world with the savior next to me.
