From 1791 to 1800 Washington District was encompassed the counties of Pendleton and Greenville. In 1800 Washington District was abolished and Pendleton Co. became Pendleton District. I think Thomas Crow was in 1790 census in Pendleton SC. 1 M. over 16 2 M under 16 2 F In the Pendleton, SC, 1790 Census there is a Ms. Charity Crow. Five houses away in one direction is Hugh Harkins. Six houses in other direction is Thomas Crow I requested the requirements for Revolution War land grants from SC. I got a copy of Act# 1075(1778) and Act# 1250(1784) What I get from reading the acts. Thomas Crow would have been a soldier. And not just supported the war effort. This is a quite from the Act of 26 March 1784. “II. And be it futher ordained by the authority aforesaid, That the land between Togolo and Keowee rivers, heretofore reserved in order that such quantity of it as the officers and soldiers of the Continental line of this State are entitled to, should be granted unto them” There is a note in margin of I. “Warrants of survey, &c. to issued grants to the officers and men of the army and navy.” There is a good chance that out Thomas Crow served in the SC Continental line. Ancestry.com has three listings for Tho or Thomas Crow. The rank of two were fifer(Tho & Thomas Crow) the other was private(Thomas Crow). Some notes about the Harkins family. Harkins family ----- Original Message ----- From: Kenneth Harkins To: LOIS DAVIS Sent: Tuesday, December 30, 2003 9:48 PM Subject: Re: Harkins Lois, I read the information in your attachment, and wondered if you were aware that some of the Harkins family, including one named Hugh Harkins, made their way to the upper Savannah River valley at Boonsborough, Belfast Township (in the Ninety Six district) via Charles Town (now Charleston), in the year1767. His petition for Warrant of Survey for 150 acres is recorded in the Council Journal, page 149. 150 acres would suggest he was accompanyed by one other person, either family member or slave. Elizabeth Harkins also presented a petition at the same time, and is listed on page 153 of the Council Journal. This information is from South Carolina Immigrants 1760 to 1770 abstracted by Jack Moreland Jones and Mary Bondurant Warren, copyrighted 1988 by Mary B. Warren, Heritage Papers, Danielsville, Ga 30633. The book contains explanations of the "Township Act", the "Headright System" the "Kings Bounty", and other pertinent information. There is a copy in the SC Room at the Charleston County Public Library. Other holdings of interest inclue Ninety Six (Landmarks of Slouth Carolina's Last Frontier Region) published by the University of South Carolina press, Columbia, SC 1950, and Early Census Index - South Carolina - Vol 2 - 1722-1741, 1763-1788 (Witha a few 1800's) edited by Ronald Vern Jackson and published by Genealogical Services, West Jordan, Utah. According to the latter, there were already two James Harkins, a John Harkins, and a Thomas Harkins in the Ninety-Six District in 1779. There are two or more deed abstract books, one of which shows that land surveyed in 1763 was granted to John Harkins in 1768. Juror's lists show another Thomas in the 96 District that was of age to serve in the early 1780's, too old to be our ancestor Thomas married to Abigail. I would bet there are also copies of these at the Caroliniana Room, which is on the Horseshoe at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. The Council Journals are supposedly extant at the SC Archives and History facility, which is off I 20 heading East out of Columbia (follow the signs). Long story short - I believe that Hugh Harkins is certainly a good possibility as the father of Thomas, husband of Abigail, but there are other potential candidates that would have to be ruled out, and I don't believe this can be satisfactorily accomplished, based on what I've read so far. I haven't been researching the Harkins family recently. I wish you all the luck in proving this relationship, and if I happen across anything that looks helpful, I'll certainly let you know.
