Welcome to a page dedicated
to the memory of the Waymart
High School
Class of 1918
Waymart, Wayne, PA, USA
As I was going through scrapbooks, pictures and lots of other momentoes from my grandmother, Bertha Priscilla (Swingle) Chapman, I found a lot of pictures, old and "new" of the Waymart High School Class of 1918. Amongst all of the scraps of papers and pictures were obituaries, funeral programs, invitations and notes about the life of these 6 young women from their time at "Waymart Normal Institute" as it was called then, to the various times that the women died. My grandmother was the last surviving member of the class when she died in 1987.

Friendships were made during those days, friendships that really did last a lifetime.
The same class with their husbands, in June 1965....their first reunion is written on the back of my photograph frame.
1st couple on the left is my grandparents: Oliver & Bertha (Swingle) Chapman.

I know some of the names on the other people, but I cannot remember which is which, there aren't any other names written on the photos. So if you know who they are please drop me a note!!!!
A little about Professor Alfred H. Howell in the graduation photo:

Professor Howell was born 7 Aug 1878 in Clinton Township, Wayne Co, PA. He died unexpectedly 8 Aug 1951 at his home in Elk Lake (Waymart), Wayne, PA. He began teaching in 1900, with certification to teach 42 different public school subjects. He spent 10 years at So Canaan, 10 years at White Mills as principal and 9 years as principal in Waymart. He developed the Waymart High School from a three grade to a four grade school. He served 25 years as Superintendent of Wayne Co. schools retiring in June 1946. From the obituary notices and the editorials in the clippings, he was a very well respected and very well liked man in the community.

From one of Gram's scrapbooks: Memories

Bring me memories, I shall not ask for more. For on their rhythm I go back, my childhood to explore. I wallow in the daisies, and buttercups, and lie and dream of anything I please and let the world go by. I see the swallows circle, above the schoolhouse there, Then swoop and disappear---I never knew just where. And with them falls the twilight, and fireflies on the wing. Light up the fancy palaces of my imagining. Bring me memories and then leave me alone, For I would wander happily in Wonderlands of my own. Where I lived Life's childhood and was both free and gay, and nearer to heaven than now I am today. by D.M. Bailey
