String Blocks

8 1/2 inch unfinished

Colors

Anything goes this is a chance to use up some of those scraps and extra strips.

Cut

1 – 8 1/2-inch Foundation Square.  This fabric will not be seen on the finished block so use any cotton fabric which will not shadow through the lightest fabrics in your block.

Piece

1.      This is a foundation-pieced block.  Lay a scrap strip right side up on the foundation block.  The fabric must be long enough to cover from one side to the other on the foundation.  It should not just sit in the middle of the foundation.  It doesn't have to be straight and begin wherever you want on the foundation.

2.      Lay another scrap on top of the first right sides together.

3.      Sew the two pieces together and trim the seam to 1/4 inch if necessary (be careful not to cut the foundation if you trim the seem).

4.      Press the two pieces open.

5.      Continue to sew and flip fabrics until the foundation is completely covered.

6.      Baste stitch inside a 1/4 inch from the edge of the foundation square.

7.      Flip the block over to the back and trim any overlap to the edge of the foundation.
