This year we challenge you to participate in a Row-by-Row Challenge. We will have sign-ups at the March meeting. Please fill out the questionnaire and bring it to the March meeting. The first Row you will make is for your own personal quilt and will be due at the April meeting. Please bring it in a brown paper bag or tote bag. We hope that everyone will join in on this challenge and that by February 2001 you will have a wonderful quilt top or completed quilt, that you will have had lots of fun, and that you will have gotten to know the other members of your group.
For those of you unfamiliar with a Row-by-Row challenge, it is quite similar to a block border round robin except that you will piece blocks or applique blocks or strips for one horizontal row of a quilt top for each member of your group. You will make your first Row that is due in April, bring it, and exchange the Row with another member of your group. That member will bring your original Row and the Row made for you and pass it on monthly until all members of your group have done a Row for each other group member. You will have until the February meeting to assemble your Rows, add borders, etc. to complete your quilt top for show-and-tell and prizes at the February meeting.
OFFICIAL RULES
1. Make your Row for the April meeting. Bring it in a bag marked with your name and address.
2. Rows are to be 50-1/2" (unfinished). Row vertical heights may vary between 4-1/2" unfinished to 10-1/2" unfinished.
3. You will exchange Rows round robin style every month. The Rows will finish their rotation at the December meeting.
4. Rows may be pieced or appliqued or a combination. All applique edges must be finished. No fusible applique or raw edge applique.
5. Bring the quilt top or completed quilt to the February meeting.
Every group will have volunteer coordinators who will help answer questions and do the necessary tracking of the challenge Rows. If you cannot bring the Rows to a meeting for exchange, please make arrangements to get your Rows to the next recipient.
A mini questionnaire will accompany your Row as it goes around. This will help the members of your group decide what to do with your Row, and also let them get to know a bit about you.
You may send fabrics along with your Row. Use of the fabrics is optional.
Every Row in each quilt is to be different; that is, if someone has already made a Row of sawtooth stars, select a different design. You may make all of your Rows the same style and design or change for each quilt top you are working on.
Assemble the blocks together to make a Row, but do not assemble the Rows together. That is to be done between December and February in whatever order you desire. You may add sashings, additional rows, and borders to your own quilt as you wish.
Coping segments are small strips added as inconspicuously as possible between the blocks or at the beginning and/or ending of the Row.
The following block sizes are based on accurate ¼" seams and accurate cutting. These are finished sizes. You will need to adjust this information based on the actual size of your blocks. For example, you could make

Keep in mind that you can also do combinations. For instance, a tree with a house might be an 8" house with a 2" tree, resulting in a total of 10" for that repeated design.
Be creative, have fun, and check back here in Feb 2001 for some pictures of the finished products!
