STARTING POINT
So, what is known of the Pakes'line? First of all myself, born 8 May 1949 in the Chase Nursing Home, Stopsley in Luton. I had a sister, Suzanne Mary, born 13 March 1953, also in the Chase Nursing Home. Sadly Suzanne passed away on 18 April 1993, leaving a husband - Raymond Foreman. Our parents are Stuart Arthur John Pakes and Louisa Ellen (nee Southey), born 6 March 1927 in Luton, and 28 December 1926 in London respectively, and married on 6 March 1948 (my father's 21st birthday). My father, educated at Luton Grammar School, followed his father into the millinery trade in Luton until 1969, when the economic climate forced him to seek althernative employment. Moving to Suffolk, my parents became Publicans at The Crown Inn in the village of Snape, near Saxmundham.

Later they moved to The Oyster Inn at Butley, a few miles away, before a stroke forced my father into retirement. My parents now live in Attleborough in Norfolk.
My Mother was a war-time evacuee, coming to Luton from London in 1939 with her brothers Bob and Alfie, and sister Rosina.
My Grandfather was Arthur Frederick, born London in 1897, married to Marjorie Mary (nee Smith).
That was the sum of the substantiated information available to me at the beginning of this genealogical study. Needless to say I was able to accumulate quite a lot of unconfirmed stories, for instance, it was known that Arthur Frederick originated from London, and it was also known that he had relatives living in Luton. One of the first questions to be addressed, had to establish the Luton/London relationship.
