Although only formed in 1969 as a result of an amalgamation of the
Welch Regiment and the South Wales Borderers, the history of the
Regiment lies deep in their combined history.
The Regiment's finest hour was in the Zulu War of 1879 where it fought at the Battle of Isandhlwana and at the Defence of Rorke's Drift. Nine Victoria Crosses were won in these battles, the most ever awarded to any regiment in a single action in the entire history of the British Army. This display of courage and strength has become so legendary across the globe that the film "Zulu" was made to commemorate the bravery of the Welsh soldiers.
