Do not for a moment think that the Infantry are the only soldiers who serve in the thick of the action. The Royal Army Medical Corps has taken part in almost every campaign and battle waged by the British Army. The 31 VCs that have been gained by its members are evidence of the gallantry of the Corps; these include two double VCs and one recipient of both the VC and the Iron Cross.
The names of many Regiments cause the heart to swell with pride: The Life Guards (the senior Regiment of the British Army); The Black Watch; The Royal Irish Regiment; The Light Infantry; The Royal Green Jackets; The 1st and 2nd Royal Tank Regiments; The Brigade of Guards; The Parachute Regiment; The Special Air Service Regiment; and the Sappers of the Royal Engineers. These and many other Regiments and Corps have inherited a long
and proud tradition of service to Great Britain.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
John McCrae
