Nylon Shells Doily

Materials Used:

Ball of household nylon twine (found with packaging materials at most discount stores)
C/2 or 2.75 mm hook

Gauge:

1st 2 rnds should measure approx. 1 1/2 inches (4 cm). Finished doily is approx. 7 inches (18 cm). in diameter.

Instructions

Ch 5, sl st in 5th ch from hook to form ring. Rnd 1: Ch 3, make 11 dc's in ring. Sl st in top of ch 3 to join. (12 dc's)
Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same space as joining, 2 dc in each dc around. <24>
Rnd 3: Repeat Rnd 2. (48)
Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, * 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc. Repeat from * around, end with sl st in top of first ch 3. (60)
Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with sl st in 1st sc.
Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in same space, ch 3, sk 1 sc, * sc in next sc, ch 3, skip 1 sc. Repeat from * around. Sl st in 1st sc to join. (30 ch 3 spaces)
Rnd 7: Sl st into 1st ch 3 spc. Ch 3, make 4 dc in same ch 3 sp (beg shell made). * Sc in next 3 ch sp, 5 dc in next ch 3 sp (shell made). Repeat from * around to last ch 3 sp. Sc in sp, sl st in top of 1st ch 3 to join. (15 shells, 15 sc's)
Rnd 8: Sl st in next 2 dc's. Ch 5, dc in same st. Ch 3, sc in next sc. Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, dc) in 3rd dc of next shell (V-st made). (Ch 3, sc in next sc, ch 3, V-st in 3rd ch of next shell) around until you have 1 sc left. Ch 3, sc in last sc, ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch of 1st ch 5 to join. (15 V-sts)
Rnd 9: Sl st into next ch 2 sp. Make beg shell. Sc in next ch 3 sp, ch 3, sc in next ch 3 sp. (Shell in next V-st, sc in next ch 3 sp, ch 3, sc in next ch3 sp) around. Sl st in top of 1st ch 3. (15 shells, 15 ch3 spaces).
Rnd 10: Ch 2 (y/o, insert hook in next st, pull loop through, y/o, pull through 2 loops) twice, y/o pull through all three loops (beg cluster made). Ch 3, y/o, insert hook in last st worked, y/o pull through loop (y/o insert hook in next st, pull loop through, y/o pull through 2 loops) twice, Y/O, pull through all 4 loops (cluster made). * Ch 3, sc in ch-3 sp. ch 3. Make cluster using 1st 3 dc's of next shell, ch 3, make cluster in last 3 dc's of same shell (you will be sharing the center dc of shell). Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3, sc in next ch 3 sp, ch 3, join in top of first cluster. Fasten off.

I was able to make two of these doilies from one ball of twine, and had twine left over. Depending on the amount of twine on your ball, you may be able to get 3 doilies from it.
