Many people today don't remember, but Finland was a royal Grand Ducky of the Russian Empire during the 19th century, and

so Finns learned high stepping like the Czar's honor guard geese that guarded the royal palace in St. Petersburg.


Olavinlinna Castle, Finland's finest, changed gloves (and ownership) repeatedly in the 18th century.

17th century fortresses around Landskrona are said to contain the best preserved relics in all Scandinavia, and sometimes visitors are mistaken for exhibit specimens, if they happen to be particularly elderly.

Finding a modern laundry in beautiful, downtown Helsinki, Finland's ultramodern capital, has never been much of a problem.

At the Handicraft Museum in the city of Turku, the combmaker, the weaver and the potter still ply trades with medieval equipment and techniques dating back to the 1990s.
