Name: Blue-Crowned Conure (Aratinga Haemorrhous)

Description: General plumage is green. Forehead is blue. Outer webs of the flight feathers are a bluish-brown with the greater under wing-coverts being a dusky yellowish-olive. The upperside of the tail is green with the outer tail-feathers and the underside of the tail being a brownish-red. Periophthalmic Ring is whitish with an orange Iris. The beak is horn-coloured and the feet are flesh-coloured to pink. Average length is 37 cm (14.5 inches) with a winglength of 180 - 202 (7 - 8 inches). Immatures often do not have the blue to the head at first. All Conures are not sexually dimorphic and must be DNA or surgically sexed.**

In The Wild: Can be found in open areas, savannah with thornbushes and trees, forest edges, and they occasionally forage into cultivated areas. Usually in small groups to flocks of up to several hundred birds outside of breeding season. Has been known to associate with the Mitred Conure (Arating Mitrata) and the White-Eyed Conure (Arating Leucophthalmus). Noisy. Gathers toward the evening to roost in trees.

Breeding Information: Breeding usually begins in April although it sometimes may start as early as December. A clutch usually consists of 2 to 4 eggs with an incubation period of 23 days and a fledging period of 50 days. Their eggs measure 32.9 x 24.0 mm (1.30 x 0.94 inches).

Temperament: Medium-noisy to noisy Conure. To satisfy their chewing requirement it is recommended that you provide fresh wood regularly. These are very hardy birds when acclimatised. (Initially can be shy and nervous.) They tolerate other species outside of breeding season well. Enjoys bathing.**

Diet: This should consist of Pellets, a good Seed Mix (Safflower, some Sunflower--also sprouted--Wheat, Oats, Groats, Canary Grass Seed and various Millets), lots of Fruits and Vegetables (particulary carrots and apples as well as half-ripe maize, rose-hips, and rowanberries), and Greens. Bread and biscuit for rearing. Diets may vary so you should consult your Avian Veterinarian.

** (Please note that not all birds are the same and may vary somewhat in Temperament and Plumage.)
