Name: Maroon-Bellied Conure (Pyrrhura Frontalisi)
Description: General plumage is green with a narrow red frontal
band, becoming dirty brown. The ear-coverts are brown and the feathers
on the side of the neck, throat and upper breast are an olive-brownish
with each feather edged a greyish-dull yellow. The primary-coverts are
a bluish-green. Primaries are blue becoming green towards the tip. The
abdomen and edging to the lower back feathers is brownish-red. The upperside
of the tail is olive-green with brownish-red tips. The underside of
the tail is a dull blackish-red. Periophthalmic Ring is white with a
dark brown Iris. Beak is dark grey and the feet are grey. Length is
26 cm (10 inches). Immatures have the same coloring as adults, but with
duller plumage and a darker Iris. All Conures are not sexually dimorphic
and must be DNA or surgically sexed. **
In The Wild: Can be found in flocks of 10 to 15 birds. They
are not shy but very sociable birds. Pairs and small groups usually
keep close together. They enjoy grooming each other and visit waterfalls
regularly. They often form a mixed flock in Brazil with the Plain Parakeet
(Brotogeris Tirica).
Breeding Information: Breeds all year long. A clutch consists
of 3 to 9 eggs with an average of 5 eggs. Incubation is 23 days with
a fledging period of 50 days. Two breedings a year are possible. Eggs
measure 25.8 x 21.0 mm (1.01 x 0.83 inches).
Temperament: This is a lively and hardy Conure. Soon becomes
confiding. They enjoy bathing often. Not hard chewers. Mostly quiet,
except when excited. They are often aggressive with other birds.**
Diet: This should consist of Pellets, a good Seed Mix (Safflower,
Oats, Paddy Rice, some Sunflower--also sprouted--Canary Seed and various
Millets), lots of Fruits, Vegetables, and Greens. Regular supply of
branches with flowers and buds recommended. Diets may vary so you should
