Name: Nanday Conure (Nandayus Nenday)

Description: General plumage is green with the lower breast, abdomen, under wing-coverts, under tail-covers and lower back a yellowish-green. The head is black. The throat and upper breast are tinged with a deep blue and the lower thighs are red. Flight-feathers are royal-blue and the upperside of the tail is an olive-green with royal-blue tips. The underside of the tail and wings are blackish. Periophthalmic Ring is whitish to grey with the Iris being brown. Their beak is black and their feet are a brownish-flesh color. Average length is 30 cm (12.0 inches). Immatures have the same coloring as adults, but with a fainter bluish tinge to the throat and upper breast. All Conures are not sexually dimorphic and must be DNA or surgically sexed.**

In The Wild: Usually found in groups of 6 to 40, but have often been observed in flocks of up to 300 birds. Larger gatherings have been seen on food and roosting trees, often associating with Monk Parakeets (Myiopsitta Monachus). Spends days on the trees and palms or foraging on the ground, low bushes or tall grass. Often first noticed by very loud screeching because they are difficult to detect as they are well camouflaged by their plumage. Their call is a shrill screech, especially when flying. They live in all types of dry to humid savannah with trees and palms.

Breeding Information: Nandays are easy breeders. The breeding season is usually from May to August. A clutch usually consists of 3 to 6 eggs. The incubation period is an average of 23 to 24 days. The fledging period is approximately 7 weeks. Their eggs measure 29.0 x 23.3 mm (1.14 x 0.92 inches).

Temperament: Intelligent and sometimes noisy Conure. They are hardy and not very difficult to keep. Affectionate and Playful. Sociable with other birds of similar size. They usually only make noise in the early morning and late afternoon, or if alarmed. Acclimates very quickly to new surroundings. Very hard chewers and a constant supply of fresh branches are recommended. One misconception is that the Nandays talking abilities are somewhat limited. This depends on the individual bird and your patience in teaching it. Most Nandays are capable of speaking a lot more phrases than just 5 or 6, as previously thought. They enjoy bathing a lot.**

Diet: This should consist of Pellets, a good Seed Mix (Safflower, Oats, some Sunflower--also sprouted--Hemp, Buckwheat, Canary Seed and various Millets), lots of Fruits and Vegetables (such as apple, mango, cucumber, carrots and rowanberries), and Greens. White bread and eggfood for rearing. Diets may vary so you should consult your Avian Veterinarian.
