Name: Queen of Bavaria Conure (aka: Golden Conure) (Aratinga
Guarouba)
Description: General plumage is yellow with green flight feathers.
They have a horn-coloured beak with a bluish tinge at the base. The
periophthalmic Ring is whitish with a brown Iris. The feet are flesh-coloured.
Length is 34 cm (13.5 inches). Immatures plumage is washed green. Adult
plumage is usually achieved by 20 months. All Conures are not sexually
dimorphic and must be DNA or surgically sexed.**
In The Wild: Can be found in rain forests, especially along
water courses. Stays in pairs or small groups outside of breeding season.
Prefers treetops and often flies rapidly from one tree to another. Uses
bill extensively for climbing in branches. They are sociable and noisy
with a call that is shrill and audible from afar. Endangered because
of extensive deforestation.
Breeding Information: Breeding often begins in December. A clutch
usually consists of 3 to 5 eggs. The incubation period is an average
of 23 days with a fledging period of 7 weeks. They are very aggressive
during breeding. Eggs measure 37.1 x 29.9 mm (1.46 x 1.18 inches).
Temperament: Sociable, noisy, inquisitive, and playful birds.
Minimal bathing and chewing requirement. They are susceptible to cold
infections however. They are also inclined to pluck feathers so they
need distractions.**
Diet: This should consist of Pellets, a good Seed Mix (Safflower,
Oats, some Sunflower--also sprouted--Hemp, Buckwheat, Millet, Canary
Grass Seed, and Rowan Berries), with plenty of Fruit (including exotic
fruits), Vegetables, and Greens. Eggfood and biscuit for rearing. Diets
may vary so you should consult your Avian Veterinarian.
** (Please note that not all birds are the same and may vary somewhat
in Temperament and Plumage.
