Eugene B. Smith, 1851-Sept. 6, 1928
and his brother "Att" Smith, 1848-after 1912Eugene B. Smith was born in Nov. 1851 to John F. Smith (son of Lewis F. Smith) and Hannah George of White Hall, near Winchester. Va. Both Eugene and his father were tailors. He had an older brother, Lewis A. (Atley, known as "Att") Smith, born in 1848. Lewis ("Att") moved to Sheridan, Wyoming, before 1889 and possibly as early as the 1870s. Eugene's older sister, Sarah Rebecca Smith, was born in 1849 and died in 1856 of "brain disease." Eugene B. also had a younger brother named Manner (?) S. Smith, born in 1852. Eugene's mother died in 1856. His father married Annie Kendrick in 1872 and had another son, Byron W. Smith, in 1873.
Eugene married Charlotte Alice Purcell (1850-before 1900?) in 1874. They had a son named Lewis Atley Smith, after Eugene's brother. The family moved to the village of Fayette in Fulton County, Ohio before 1880. At some point Charlotte died. Eugene's second wife was named Cora. This photo was taken about two weeks before his death in 1928. The descendant who provided the photo does not know whether the woman in the photo is Cora.
Lewis Atley ("Att") Smith (1848-after 1912) on horseback with his nephew Carter Eugene Smith; nephew George Elwell Smith is in the background with Ella, presumably Att's wife. This photo was taken in 1912, probably in or near Dayton or Sheridan, Wyoming. Both are in Sheridan County, where Atley Smith lived. He was listed as a grand juror for the 1889 November election. His name was drawn from a list of eligible jurors from Dayton, in Sheridan County, wyoming..
