Lewis F. Smith and sons of Frederick County Va.

LEWIS F. SMITH was born Abt. 1793, probably in Germany, Maryland, or Va.. He died after 1850 and probably before 1867 in Frederick Co. Va.. He married SUSAN ? Abt. 1820. He was in Frederick County by 1830, as he is listed in the 1830 census with all family members of ages consistent with the ages of his known children, himself, and his wife. Susan probably died betw. 1870-1876 in Ford Co. IL after moving there with her daughter and son-law.

Lewis Smith owned land in the Back Creek area of Frederick Co. that he sold to a Jacob Seibert in the early 1840s. I found this on land microfilm but cannot now locate my notes on the specific reel.

On 27 Oct. 1848 he bought from Abraham, John, and Lucinda Moyers of Augusta Co. a tract of 130 acres near McCleaves Mill in the Pine Hills bordering on ("cornering on") Charles Moyers' land . See Deed Book 77, pp. 27-30. This deed is followed by another deed of trust of 7 Nov. 1848 from Lewis and Susan Smith to Jacob S. Danner and Edwin B. Ridings. The Smiths are in debt to Ridings for $300 "for entering security of Smith on a bond drawn in favor of Abraham Moyers 12 months after date and dated 27 Oct. 1848. Security is the 130 acres purchased of Moyers except for the 10 acres 3 rods and 5 perches (or poles) sold to Daniel Steel." Smith sold these 10 acres to Daniel Steel on Dry Run. Nov. 7 1848,  recorded 29 Nov. 1848.
(Note: Daniel Steel's son Daniel Edgar Steele would later marry Lewis Smith's grandaughter Delphia Ann Sargent. And there are more interconnections, as you will see if you explore the database.)

In about 1849 Lewis sold the McCleaves Mill, Pine Hills land tract (130 acres minus the 10 sold to Daniel Steel=120 acres)  to his sons Simon P. and Isaac N. Smith for $700. See Deed Book 77, p. 420.

In 1855, Simon sells his share of the land (60 acres) to his brother Isaac N. for $450. This tract is joining Atwell Barrow, Henry Scoolin (?), Isaac Fry, Daniel Steel, and Edwin B. Ridings. No witnesses; both Simon and Isaac sign. Dated 13 Nov. 1855, recorded 17 Nov. 1855. Deed Book 82, 339-40. Presumably this is just before Simon moves his family over the border to Warren County just a few short miles away.

(The Moyers property was orig. deeded to John Moyers by Casper Moyers Sr. and Mary his wife 1 Aug. 1777, Deed Book 17, p. 355; by John bequeathed to Mary his daughter by his will of 15 Feb. 1829, Mary married Abraham Moyers and their children John W. and Lucinda Moyers were parties to the deed signed by Lewis Smith in 1848. This property "corners on Charles Moyers.") Earlier deed books show that this or other Moyers land was also once owned by William and John Barrow.
