Dormice(glis) usually cost from 15 to 30 dollars. Anything more and you are being taken. They live a couple of years and are social toward other dormice. They can me kept in an aquarium or in a habit trail or sam cage. You should be careful to make sure that there is no tiny holes in the cage and the pieces fit together nicely. Dormice are small and can fit through tight spaces because of the shape of their heads. The dormice frequently sold in pet stores are said to be from Africa. They are also said to be a delicacy in Europe.
Because I don’t have a lot of room in my dorm I bought a female dormouse from my pet store and a small habit trail cage(Suite). She was pregnant and had 4 babies. Two of them survived birth. The mother was somewhat tame before she gave birth, although she did bite from time to time and was extremely nervous. After she gave birth she was uncontrollable. She bit and tried to jump when handled. I had to sell her back after her babies were weaned. Her babies are great. I named them Beppino and Mieska. Since they were handled since they were babies they never bite and are very calm, compared to most dormice. I can actually walk around the dorm with them sitting in my pocket. They stick their heads out and look around. I feed them small animal food. They love the sunflower seeds and dehydrated peanut butter nuggets. I also feed them fruit three times a week. I gave them the fruit before I go to sleep and take out the leftovers the morning after to keep the cage from smelling. I give them superworms once a week and I was told that they also enjoy crickets and mealworms.
These make good pets for those who like small rodents. They are somewhat dirty and very nervous. They are quiet and can be tamed. Once they are tamed they will lick juice off your hand and sit in your pocket. They can be a lot of fun.
