Holmains Tower and Moor, Scotland
Carruthers of Holmains was an important force on the Scottish borders for over 300 years. It was founded by Roger de Carutheris who received the charter in 1375. The tower of Holmains once stood on a rocky outcrop on the shallow cup of Holmains Moor with a commanding view to the East. The location had been an important strategic point for many years. There is an ancient earthworks fort, Range Castle, nearby. Nothing remains of the tower itself but a pile of dressed stones. Many of these stones were used to build a sizable house nearby that is itself abandoned. The site is now part of Kirkhill farm and sheep and cattle graze over the area.
