Genealogy of Pat's Dutch Families

NOTE: Pat's direct-line ancestors are marked with an asterisk (*).

(1)*Jan WINANS, born about 1630-1640, thought to be from the Netherlands where the surname originated; possibly moved next to Danzig area. Possible Netherlands relatives were Wynant Pieters and Barnabus Wines; Jan Wijnants (landscaper of Haarlem) and the Winans family of Brabant. The first record of *Jan in the new world is his marriage in New Haven CT to *Susannah MELYN on 25 Aug 1664. She was baptized in the New Amsterdam Dutch Church 14 Jun 1643, a daughter of of *Cornelis MELYN and *Jannetje ADRAIENS. About 1693 *Jan married Ann ROBERTSON, a daughter of physician William ROBERTSON. *Jan died Dec 1694, Elizabethtown, NJ.

Children of *Jan WINANS and *Susannah MELYN:
(2-1) John WINANS, b 1 Jul 1665, probably died before 1673 when another son was named John.
(2-2) Susannah WINANS, b 9 Feb 1667, New Haven CT, baptized in the New York Dutch Church 3 Oct 1674. She married (before 1687/1688) Henry BAKER / BACKER (b abt 1658, a son of Jacobus BACKER and Margaret STUYVASENT, he was baptized New York Dutch Church 26 Sep 1660; he died 4 Feb 1734/1735 at Elizabethtown NJ).
(2-3) Elizabeth WINANS, b abt 1669, baptized 28 Mar 1671 New York Dutch Church; she died 1 Jul 1739. She married abt 1670 Capt. Ebenezer LYON (b abt 1670, Newark NJ, a son of Henry LYON and Elizabeth BATEMAN; he died 31 Mar 1739, bur Elizabethtown NJ).
(2-4) Samuel WINANS, b abt 1671, baptized 2 Apr 1672 at New York Dutch Church; married Zerviah -?-, he died 27 Sep 1741, bur Elizabethtown NJ.
(2-5)*John WINANS, b 3 Oct 1673; baptized 3 Oct 1674 at New York Dutch Church with his sister, Susannah. He married 1st *Remember BALDWIN and 2nd Mrs. Frances (MOORE) DODDRIDGE. (See *John WINANS line.)
(2-6) Joanna WINANS, b abt 1675/1678, appears in father's will.
(2-7) Conrad WINANS, b abt 1680, married Sarah PALMER; he died 2 Feb 1727/1728.
(2-8) Jacob WINANS, b abt 1682, married Mary MORSE; he died 4 Jan 1722/1723.
(2-9) Isaac WINANS, b abt 1684, married Hannah -?-; he died 1723.

(2-10) William WINANS, b bt 1694, married Hannah CODDINGTON) abt 1717/1718; he died 1762/1763.

(2-5)*John WINANS, b 3 Oct 1673, bap 3 Oct 1674 New York Dutch Church (with his sister, Susannah); he married #1, *Remember (possibly BALDWIN). *Remember was born abt 1680; she died 10 Feb 1722/1723 at 42 years of age, and is buried at Elizabethtown NJ. [If BALDWIN is her correct surname, she was probably a daughter of Josiah BALDWIN(2), son of John BALDWIN(1) of Milford, as Josiah had a daughter born 1680.]

Children of *John WINANS and *Remember BALDWIN:
(3-1) John WINANS, b abt 1698, d 1740; married Ann CREIGHTON, a daughter of James CREIGHTON.
(3-2) William WINANS, b abt 1700, d 31 Aug 1760; married his step sister, Elizabeth DODDRIDGE, (b abt 1701, d 22 Mar 1761).
(3-3) Susannah WINANS, b abt 1702, d 28 Nov 1758; married Samuel BRENT (b abt 1700, d 18 Oct 1744). [This Susannah is believed to be a daughter of *John and *Remember, but proof of her birth not found.]
(3-4) Isaac WINANS, b abt 1705, d 6 Mar 1730/1731; married Hannah WILLIAMS.
(3-5)*Lewis WINANS, b abt 1718; married *Lydia KELSEY, a daughter of *Joseph KELSEY. (See *Lewis WINANS line.)
(3-6) Josiah WINANS, b abat 1720, d 25 Nov 1779; married #1, his half-cousin, Experience WINANS (dau of William WINANS); he married #2, Mrs. Abigail (BARNETT) SELNAVE.

(3-5)*Lewis WINANS, b abt 1718; married *Lydia KELSEY, a daughter of *Joseph KELSEY and his 2nd wife. Lewis was supposedly named after the New Jersey Colonial governor, Lewis Morris.

Children of *Lewis WINANS and *Lydia KELSEY:
(4-1)*John WINANS, birth record not found; married *Sarah PRYOR 12 Jul 1770 (per letter Madison Co OH Historical Society); (Sarah daughter of *Andrew and *Polly PRIOR per Providence Presbyterian Church record). (See *John WINANS line.) (4-2)*Benjamin WINANS, b 29 Feb 1746; married *Mary SUTTON. (See Benjamin WINANS line.) (4-3) Lewis WINANS, b 1750, d 1825; married Sarah HALSEY. (4-4) Kelsey WINANS, birth record not found; served in Revolutionary War from Essex County NJ.
