Welcome to the Tennessee Adoption Registry! Please read the following FAQ before posting to the registry.
Tennessee Adoption Registry FAQ
Who created this registry, and why?
I am a Tennessee adoptee who understands the desire to search. The search process can be everything from difficult, tedious and discrouraging to wonderful, exciting and amazing. It is my goal to create a resource for Tennessee searchers that makes searching an easier, joyous experience.
Isn't Tennessee an Open-Records state?
This matter is currently in dispute. The Tennessee Open-Records Law was challenged in court, and there's currently a hold on all release of identifying enformation -- even in cases where both parties have consented. However, the Tennessee Supreme Court heard oral arguments on the case on June 3rd, 1999. The final decision should be handed down in the coming months.
Who is eligible to post to this registry?
Anyone who is concerned about a Tennessee adoption that took place on or after March 16, 1951. Adoptees, siblings, birth family members, adoptive family members, and friends are all welcome to submit information. (Those adoptees who were born in another state and adopted in TN, or vice versa are also welcome to post to the registry.)
My friend/family member is an adoptee/birth relative. Can I post information for her?
It's always preferable that the searcher posts the information him/herself, but I have no official policy against it. Please get consent first before posting information.
Why is this registry for post-1950 Tennessee adoptions only?
According to state law, records are open for adoptions that occured before March 16, 1951. The records are closed for adoptions that were attempted or occured on or after March 16, 1951. The State of Tennessee does have a mutual-consent registry, however it is my understanding that they are backlogged by years due to the legal proceedings. (See Laws page.) However, I may make exceptions to this based on special circumstances.
I am/am looking for a person under age 18. Can I post to the registry?
This registry is available to legal adults only.
I see a post that looks familiar. How do I reply to this person?
If you wish to reply to a post that looks familiar, press the "REPLY" button at the bottom of that page. The replies come to me, and then I will share the information after having contacted both parties. If you wish to submit your own information to the registry, please hit the "ADD MY INFO" button.
Will you ever sell my information to private investigators, etc?
Never. Your information will always be kept confidential! I will contact all parties involved before releasing any information, and I will never accept payment for this service.
What if I change my mind? How do I go about removing my post and information?
You may feel free to have me remove your post at any time. To do so, simply email me at tennadopt@hotmail.com with your registry number and basic information, and it will disappear from the registry as soon as possible.
