PEARL'S CHILDHOOD STORIES
"HOW LITTLE PEARL GOT RID OF RATS ON THE FARM"
When my father was going to shell corn--we had the corn in the barn at one end--and when he went to shell it there came rats out as he was working. You see, they were down underneath the corn, in holes they had made, and there they were, eating and eating. So when we got to the end of the shelling, and my dad was all through, the rats would come out one after the other from the ground there. I don't know where I heard of it or how I thought of it, but I thought, "I'm going to get some red paint and a brush and see if I can't catch 'em' by opening the door partways, and when they try to squeeze through and can't make it I'd be right there and put my foot right on them and paint them." I got some red paint and a brush, caught them in between the door and my foot and painted them red. And in a day they were all gone! There wasn't a rat in sight, because all the other rats were afraid, just scared to death, because the red rats chased them all off the Farm, so we never had any rats after that.
