A STADEM FAMILY TRIBUTE TO TAYLOR MISSIONARY FAMILY

THE LATTER YEARS OF MINISTRY: CARL AND CORA STADEM-TAYLOR'S LETTER FROM THE FIELD TO BERNICE SCHAEFER

From Jacutinga, Minas Gerais, Brazil, ? 29th, 1985

Cora: "Dearest Gussie [Bernice Schaefer, sister to Cora]: Here I am sitting on a bed in cold freezing weather waiting for Carl to get back so we can continue our conference of 5 days. The pastor had him take him to Santos, on the beach to a conference where he was to speak this p.m. so they won't get back until meeting time. I always refused to go like that as I get so whipped down I'm no good in the night meeting. I never remember to tell you how miserable the winters are down here. I came off with just a sweater as it was hot when we left home. Wow, have I suffered. I called Beth Ann long distance to have her send me a wrap, and she said they had a terrible freeze last night. The people never discuss the temperature, they just get out of their houses as soon as possible and stand in the sun. Everyone down here takes a bath everyday no matter what the weather. Where we have electricity we have electric showers, which feel tremendous, but you need to come out sometime, so that's life. A couple of students from Peniel [the Peniel Bible Institute in Jacutinga, run by the New Tribes Mission] have been invited to come tonight to help on the program. I trust they remember Beth's poncho.

"Everyone has had flue or if not he is coming down with it or on his way out. This winter is tough. We are 200 km's from home in Sao Paulo staying with a young pastor and wife that are planning on going to the Far East to work with the Moslems with Mission "Paz". They are precious. She is in her 8th month, so has one in the hanger, and the other on the runway. They gave us their bed and they are sleeping on a single matress and the pillows of the davenport. Can you imagine an American doing that? I've had some good meetings with the women for two nights and my darling with the men. Then for 3 nights he will preach on missions. We show the movie films on our Indian work each night which really interest the people. This is a very alive church and we expect students from here [for training at Penial for mission work among the Indians].

"Just noticed I brought your wrong letter to answer. That was the news-iest letter I have ever read. Tremendous. Don't take for granted that we know news because you are the only one that writes anymore. What happened when Leroy [pastor brother to Cora] left the church? It seemed strange that the assistant left at the same time.--Cora"

Carl: "This is her husband. It's the 29th. I need the typewriter. Your letter is in it. My darling has a cold and it seems a deep cough. Doesn't sound good. We got back from Sao Paulo on the 26th. On Saturday, 31st, we return [to Jacutinga], Lord willing. This time for only two days. Hope to have her take exams on Monday, if it works out. I took them last week. Everything is normal except blood sugar is extremely low. The doctor will give me another exam to determine if it is the pancreas or improper digestion. Am more inclined to believe it's the latter. I have no hydrochloric acid in my system. if I don't take it or don't take lemon juice regularly (the only food that contains it, according to Mim and Dr. Reames) my digestion is affected. Last week I went off without any. But it does seem strange that it fell so low (the low blood sugar count). Will have to be more faithful on this. These bodies are very sensitive.

"Also took an eye exam and need new lenses. These bodies really do need lots of maintenance. With Calcium and Vit. D, that conjuntivitis got better, praise God. Certain days, it still affects me, but much better. Thanks for your newsy letter. It does us lots of good to hear all about everybody. You are a "Dilly". Now this may be a bit of news, at least not common every year, we think of coming to the states along the latter part of Feb. or first of March in '86, Lord willing. Formerly, it was a foregone conclusion that we'd all meet together around the 20th of May wherever Mama Stadem happened to be. Certainly we don't consider ourselves important enough around which to have a family reunion, but if you are going to have one anyway, certainly we'd like to be present. We have a Refresher's Course [for New Tribes missionaries] for either two or three weeks. From June 15 to July 7 would pretty well take care of that date, am sure it would fall within that period. It's held in Missouri.

"Our intention is to spend March around Florida and the south, most likely working our way northward in April, as He wills. If you folks plan to have a get-together, knowing ahead of time as to when it is, we can work our itinerary around it. It is likely that we shall return to the field by September [1986], if nothing unforeseen occurs.

"Do greet your good Hubby. If we do have a get-together, I hope Russ can be present, and share something of the Word with us.

"We love you both dearly and praise God for your lives and ministry. Greet Eldred and his sisters from us. The only way that Cora would desire to come to the west coast would be by a special rate or flight on some airline. Do pray with us along those lines. There are a number of groups that we'd like to visit, if He should open the way. Everything is a bit harder along these lines than it was a few decades ago, but certainly He is able to give grace and wisdom.

May you find Him increasingly real and precious in your daily lives and ministry. In His matchless grace, Carl and Cora"

THIS PAGE HAS BEEN INACTIVE TOO LONG. WE HOPE TO TURN THAT AROUND! AN UPCOMING CHAPTER ON CORA AND CARL TAYLOR AND THEIR INVOLVEMENT WITH THE EARLY DAYS OF THE MISSION WORK IN BRAZIL IS PRESENTLY BEING COMPILED AND WRITTEN IN A BOOK BY THE SON OF THE NATIONAL DIRECTOR OF THE NEW TRIBES MISSION OF BRAZIL. HE IS RIGHT NOW INTERVIEWING CORA TAYLOR IN JACUTINGA. SHE ALSO HAS QUESTIONS SENT TO HER BY US ABOUT HER LIFE. WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE BRAZILIAN NTM BOOK, AND WILL SEEK TO USE EXCERPTS OF IT IN FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF THE TAYLOR MINISTRY PAGES, WHICH WILL COVER OVER FIFTY YEARS OF THE TAYLORS IN BRAZIL. IN THE NEAR FUTURE, PLEASE RETURN TO SEE IF WE HAVE THE MATERIAL ON-LINE FROM OUR OWN QUESTIONS GIVEN TO CORA TAYLOR. THEY WILL APPEAR IN THE PAGES OF "CANDID QUESTIONS AND REPLIES". WE ALSO HAVE PERMISSION TO PUBLISH CORA TAYLOR'S RECENT ACCOUNT OF THE TAYLOR MINISTRY IN BRAZIL AND EVEN IN ALASKA, AND HOW THE TAYLORS ENDED UP IN MISSIONARY WORK IN BRAZIL. THIS WE HOPE TO HAVE ON-LINE SOON. THIS VIBRANT FAMILY IS ACTIVE ON ALL FRONTS. ONE BRANCH IS SEEKING TO GO TO A MOSLEM NATION. MANY FAMILY MEMBERS ARE GOING TO ATTEND THE COMING REUNION IN THE SECOND WEEK OF JULY IN SOUTH DAKOTA! THIS WILL BE AN EPIC REUNION DUE TO THREE MEMORIALS, FOR AUNT ESTELLE, AUNT RUTH, AND UNCLE HANS, WHO HAVE JOINED THE EVER GROWING COMPANY OF ALFRED AND BIRGIT STADEM DESCENDANTS IN HEAVEN.--EDITORS
