ROCK WALL
©By Russ

There’s a rock wall that runs the length of this lot. It
is about 5 feet tall, and goes about 50 feet. It ends
(for some reason ) several feet short of the property line,
indicating to me that the builder was not through with what he had planned.
The wall is set in concrete (which is always a marvel to me).
There’s something about tiny stones(gravel and cement)
binding huge rocks together that has always impressed me.
Gray stones rise and fall, creating the illusion of
waves which move across its entire length.
The wall was built to support a lane which runs even
with its top and is a mere step outside our gate. It sets far too
close to the house for its massive beauty to be fully
viewed. It cannot be seen at all from above.
Only small sections can be seen from below, and then
only from a certain place on the other side of the yard.
It is from this vantage point that I sit, marveling at the
effort that went into its creation.
And I wonder who the builder was, and at how interesting
it is, that a thing built for such utility, and purpose, is
beautiful enough to be inside our house.
I’ve dug down along side of it, exposing all of the wall
to its base.
Miniture fuchias, hang over the stone edge, reaching down
into the cool shade beneath the eaves.
I keep thinking how I’d like to create a small shade garden
there, and replace my clutter of garden tools...those odds and
ends too vital too just throw away...(at least for today).
I wonder too, if I may be a bit like that wall, and have missed
the beauty and purpose to my own creation .
And that I’ve just been too busy to notice how I’ve
become wedged in between tools and everyday clutter,
which prevented me from seeing.
And that I just needed to draw back to some point distant from
it all....and just sit awhile.
