COOL MORNING, GENTLE BREEZE
©By Russ
It’s a cool cloudless morning,
the sun's rays barely penetrate
the trees that surround the cabin.
Bird song fills the air....a pair of
sleek black ravens pass overhead,
accompanied by the protesting crys of
an unseen crow.
The smell of coffee brewing filters
out onto the porch to blend with a
light fragrance of fir.
Two jays chase one another above
the yard screaming loudly.
The pursuing jay connects with the
other and small blue feathers flutter
down. And as quickly as they came,
they are gone.
Orange and black gross beaks mew
softly while hanging upside down,
eating purple plums.
Misty lies on her blanket by the bench,
head on paws, energy low. She’ll not
get up because I am here, and will
wait for Em to come out the door before
she stirs. No matter how much it hurts
her she won’t miss her morning walk with Em.
Band-tailed pigeons and mourning
doves dot the trees awaiting the sound
of seed pouring into feeders, a clear
signal that breakfast is served.
Two boys work on the most important
part of their ragged ‘new’ truck and
rap music fills the morning air..a loud
message telling me to find other things to do.
A gentle breeze begins to blow, declaring
a continuing cool day, and I rise to go into
the cabin where the smell of coffee calls
me by name.
