SKY STREAM COOLING ME
©By Russ
Turkey vultures ride the high thermals
overhead, gliding in silent , effortless
never ending circles.
Shasta daisies stand 5 foot tall lined
up like green army assigned to guard
the front porch. Small white caps top
them off...mere days away from bloom.
A cold wind appears from nowhere and
blows at roof top level , bending branches
and the tops of the taller shrubs.
An occasional bend in this serendipitous
stream sends coolness flowing across
the porch and me.
A gray blue jay drops abruptly down
onto the moss covered limb of an oak,
glances once at me, bends himself in
a half circle and proceeds nonchalantly
to preen his tail feathers.
Green and gray swallows perform
acrobatic maneuvers in chase of rising
flies and gnats. A loud, red and white,
single engined plane does somewhat
the same, but in chase of something
more than food.
A mother squirrel moves through the
trees while carrying her young in her mouth.
An orange yellow sherbet colored bird
perches atop an adjacent fir.
Bronze skinned children laugh and shout
as they pass the cabin. Beach towels
across slender shoulders, and hand
held coolers tell me the river has called
to them.
The world passes close by my door today,
but it is certain the world has not passed
me by.
