THE STRAITS OF MACKINAC--Continued

This 1930's Curt Teich postcard, published by G. H. Wickman of Mackinac Island, shows THE STRAITS OF MACKINAC on the right moored at the Michigan State Auto Ferry Dock in Mackinaw City, Michigan. The vessel on the left is one of the older and smaller ferries, either the MACKINAW CITY or the ST. IGNACE.

Your webmaster, on the left, rode the MACKINAW CITY in 1929. He appears above with his mother, Derua Smith and his aunt, Mabel Davenport.

As you can tell from this side view, the MACKINAW CITY was definitely smaller than the STRAITS OF MACKINAC.

Here is a photo taken by Jack Hale of Cheboygan, Michigan and published by the Hiawatha Card Co. of Ypsilanti. It shows THE STRAITS OF MACKINAC in winter layup at St. Ignace. The exact date is unknown, but it was definitely prior to 1957 when the State of Michigan ceased operating the ferries after the opening of the Mackinac Straits Bridge.
