FLIGHTS OF FANCY

One of the most interesting and entertaining threads that has appeared on Greyhound-L consisted of limericks. Being poetically challenged, I had to settle for appreciating everyone else's limericks about their hounds until Carla Pickering offered to write one for my "girls." At that point, Amber was still with us, and Comet was still at the track. Hmmm. I wonder if she'll write a few lines to add Comet in? And the answer is--YES! See "The Next Chapter" below.

Poet's note:
For limericks to work best, you have to sound every syllable when you read them. Enjoy!

Who says that a greyhound can't bark?
When that petting hand misses its mark
You can hear her so clear
As she barks "Scritch right here!"
No, that Amber's lost none of her spark!

Red fawn brindle, now frosted with white
Coming home to you, what a delight!
You've taught Sharon so much
With your sweet greyhound touch
That adopting two more just seemed right!

Next was Topaz, blue, timid and shy.
What a great heart your panic did hide!
Now released, like the lark!
Morning song conquers dark,
Safe forever now by Sharon's side.

Now her tail does so joyfully whirl,
She's become a true "Calendar girl"
In December you'll find her*,
A lovely reminder
That beneath many shells lies a pearl!

A fawn brindle is Jonesy, they say;
Ever ready to poke or to play.
Every belt that's laid down
Will by Jonesy be found,
And each baseball hat's carried away!

Well she certainly makes Sharon laugh,
But that's not her value by half--
For her heart is so true,
Stuck to Sharon like glue!
Every day, by her side, on life's path.

THE NEXT CHAPTER

Amber's passing left quiet extreme,
For of velcro dogs she'd been the queen!
So they brought Comet home,
Now they're never alone
Even at times when they'd like to be!

Well, he is his own greyhound for sure!
But his tank-like progress they endure.
His sisters don't fear him,
His antics endear him
And his kisses bring him fans galore!

*Topaz was featured in the "Celebrating Greyhounds 1997 Calendar" for December. The photo on her page (link below) is the one same as in the calendar.

So you think you don't have room for a greyhound? I'm at the limit allowed by Baltimore County without needing a kennel license, but I've figured a way around that! Since Comet has decided that he needs another guy to hang out with, and since Gatsby is a real "parti" animal (he's a parti-color grey!), and since Scribe is a friend of mine.... I'm announcing my virtual adoption of Gatsby!

This handsome guy is an AKC registered greyhound and a real gentleman! Gee, maybe some of his gentlemanly behavior will rub off on Comet, who needs any assistance of that nature that he can get...
