GEORGE WALLINGFORD

George Wallingford was born 22 May 1822 probably in Montreal, Lower Canada1. He married Rose de Lima Berichon on 23 April 1849 at the Basilica of Notre Dame in Bytown, Upper Canada, (Bytown was renamed Ottawa in 1854). According to the marriage record, he was the son of Joseph Wallingford and Genevieve Quenonblack. Since Joseph and Genevieve were married in Montreal; most of their children were baptised there and Joseph was buried there, it is likely that George was born there as well. No baptismal record has been found for George in Montreal, so there is a possibility he may have born elsewhere. When George and Rose married in 1849, both were of Bytown. Rose was the daughter of Isaac Berichon and Adelaide LaLonde. George's occupation was listed as butcher2.

In 1857 George was listed in the Directory of the Province of Ontario. He was living on Ottawa Street in Ottawa, Carleton County. The directory lists his occupation as a butcher3. Lovell's Canadian Dominion Directory For 1871 lists George as a butcher as well, however, he was then living in Templeton, Ottawa County, Quebec4. Templeton lies north of Ottawa, along the Ottawa River. George, Rose and six children appear on the 1871 census of Canada in Templeton. The entry appears as follows:

George Wallingford, M[ale], 44, born in Quebec, Catholic, French, Farmer, Married
Rosedelenan, F[emal], 39, born in Quebec, Catholic, French, Married
George, M, 14, born in Ontario, Catholic, French
John, M, 14 born Ontario, Catholic, French
Edwart, M, 8, born in Ontario, Catholic, French
William F, M, 4, born in Ontario, Catholic, French
Mary, F, 17, born in Ontario, Catholic, French
Angelle, F, 4 months old, born in Dec, in Quebec, Catholic, French5

Ten years later, George, Rose and family were again enumerated in Templeton according to the online version of the 1881 Census of Canada (FamilySearch.org). The surname in the online version is given as "Wellington". I have not viewed the microfilm copy of the original to check the handwriting. George and Mary were not enumerated with them and some of the children were referred to by different names.

George Wellington was 58, "English" and a farmer
Rose Delima was 49 and French
    Henry was 20 and English
    Edwart was 18 and English
    William was 14 and English
Cordelia was 10, English and born in Quebec
Clarabele was 8, English and born in Quebec6

There are slight differences in the two enumerations, particularly in the names of the children. In 1881, John was enumerated as Henry and Angelle was enumerated as Cordelia. George and the children were listed as French in 1871 but English in 1881. In 1871 there was a daughter Mary and a daughter Angelle. Mary was 17 and Angelle was just four months, having been born in December, [of 1870]. On 7 august 1871, a daughter of George and Rose married Xavier Duquet in Pointe Gatineau. Her name was Angelina7. Obviously this cannot have been the Angelle who was listed as being four months old on the census report of 1871. In the list of children below, I have listed Mary as Mary Angeline as it would appear that they are one and the same.

Their children:

  1. Rose de Lima was born 24 April 1849 and was baptised the same day at the Basilica of Notre Dame, Bytown, Upper Canada (now Ottawa, Ontario).8.
  2. Marie Josephine was born 31 March 1850 and baptised 20 May 1850 at the Basilica of Notre Dame, Bytown, Upper Canada.9.
  3. Mary Angeline was born 23 June 1852 in Upper Canada.
  4. George Michel was born ca 1857
  5. John Henry was born ca 1857 and died in 1935
  6. Edward Lewis was born ca 1863 according to census reports and baptised 7 September 1867 at the Basilica of Notre Dame in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
  7. Nicholas was born 2 August 1864 and baptised 4 August 1864 in Ottawa, Canada.
  8. William Frederick was baptised 6 January 1867 at the Basilica of Notre Dame in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
  9. Cordelia was born Decenber 1870
  10. Marie Clarabelle was born 25 December 1872 and baptised 20 January 1873.
