Bits & Pieces

Persian Breed Council

This December it will again be time to elect a Persian breed secretary. I believe the deadline for joining the breed council is October. Wrote to CFA and ask them to send you the information for becoming a member. It is not as hard to qualify as you may think. There are usually important issues to vote on. Your breed council secretary would encourage your membership.

Alpine Air Purifier

To the breeders that asked for a contact to obtain information on the Alpine Air purifier that I wrote about way back when. His name is Ken McColloch, 4185 SW 102nd Ave., Beaverton, Oregon 97005, (503) 626-8059. When you call, let him know that you are a breeder so he will key in on the items you are interested in. Also ask him about the petri dish (bacteria) test. I just traded in my smaller Alpine for a larger unit. You see I now have four breeding males, previously I have always had only three.

Oral Wash

Are you aware that Fort Dodge makes a product called Nolvadent? This is an oral cleansing agent that contains ingredients that safely kill bacteria and help to break down tarter build-up. Oh, by the way, this is for your cats, not you.

Pennyroyal Danger

The Cornell University Newsletter from February of 1993 has an article on pennyroyal, which is known as a flea repellent, and is found in many shampoos. Pennyroyal can be toxic to both humans and dogs. There is no mention of cats or any other small animal. The article talks about a dog treated with pennyroyal that experienced seizures, liver failure and death. There is no antidote available, if an overdose is suspected; the animal should be washed thoroughly with mild detergent until no residue of the pennyroyal can be detected. Liver damage can occur within 24 hours.

Jeannie's Luck

Jeannie is a new breeder; Jeannie is delightful, Jeannie frequently asks for advice. Well, Jeannie called me last night and asked what I would think about her buying a red male. I said, "Why, you have very nice red male." Her answer was "What if this one is better?" "Jeannie, where did you find this better red male?" Her answer was that she called an ad from the newspaper. "The NEWSPAPER," I yelled, "Jeannie, I thought we all told you to stop calling on those ads. "But Donna, this cat is only $500.00 and is being sold because the breeder (you call this a breeder?) wants to breed bi-colors and himmys, what I mean here is together. This produces kittens that she calls broken himmys, I think she means their pattern, not their legs." Well, tonight Jeannie comes home with a very nice grand quality red male, he is 11 months and is breeding, he is clean and has a great personality. Gee, Jeannie, how about calling me the next time you go to see one of those ads that you have called!

Cats Tonsils

Do cats have tonsils? I never thought about it. A friend told me that her three-year-old female had recurring upper respiratory problems. After unsuccessful antibiotic therapy, the vet removed the tonsils and the cat is remarkably improved. I have two feline health books but could not find any mention of tonsils in either one, but apparently cats have tonsils.

Cat Beds

For those of you who find it difficult to keep the kitty beds clean, I slip a pillowcase over the round doughnut beds. For the larger beds of the cubbyholes in the scratching posts, I fold the pillowcase and just place it on the bottom. It is so easy to change just the pillowcase, plus your beds will last longer if they are not washed as frequently.
