Cibolo Wilderness Trail
Boerne, TX
I can describe this trail in one word, varietal. The trail begins at the Cibolo Nature Center where one must pick up the information pamphlet on all the numerous wildlife habitats including the abundant wildflower guide to this wonderful little place in the Texas Hill Country. The trail brings you first through grassland to creekbed, and then from marshland to woodland.
As we entered through the prairie, full of wild sunflowers swaying in waves through the wind, Ariana became very amused by the jumping crickets which flew aside into the tall grass as we walked by. Soon the habitat changed into a creekside hike as we hiked over the old cypress tree roots feeding off the shallow, steadily flowing Cibolo Creek. We hopped over roots and walked under horizontal
cypress tree growths which covered the path. We sat on a large wide root as the sun began to heat us from our short hike. We had sandwiches and naturally before I could say hey Ariana had her shoes and socks off ready to take a cool wade. When I turned around her shoe began to float away downstream... My impulse took me running down the creek with my shoes and socks intact, nevertheless I saved the shoe! Ariana found it totally amusing, and we laughed out loud, most likely scaring any wildlife that lingered about us.
Continuing in my soaked hiking shoes, we took a short cut up a flight of stairs which brought us to a woodland trail, returning us to the Nature Center. On the way however we enjoyed identifying all the beautiful wildflowers with its array of colors from the white, yellow, red, and purple blooms. Since we are not accustomed to exploring in snake country, I naturally kept my eye out for those slithering creatures.
A highly recommended trail for young ones, there is so much to see and learn here.
